Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are working on The Salamander Room.
Does anyone have any plans in addition to the FIAR
manual? If you are willing to share your ideas I would be most greatful. I really like the book but for some reason I am having a hard time developing the trails.

Thanks.

Hi Kristen,

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but here is what we did in our Salamander Room lapbook. Ds was 4 at the time (nearly three years ago!!) and it has been fun for me to look at what we did.

1. A tab-top book with the four stages of the salamander life cycle (pictures cut out from an enchanted learning printable Enchanted Learning.

2. A reptiles and amphibians themed math page from Learing Page (simple addition for us).

3. A big page that says "A Salamander is not a Reptile". Under this a full page sliced in half to make two large flaps with big cut-outs of a lizard and a salamander from Learning Page. Beneath this a Venn diagram showing the differences and similarities of lizards and salamanders.

3. A story/narration about finding some salamander tadpoles...

4. A map of the USA with the southeastern states colored red to show the habitat of the Red Salamander (the one in the S.R. book).

5. Ds colored six pieces of card about 4x6 with various stripes, spots, and other wacky combos. Then on a larger piece of card I used an nexacto-knife thingy to cut out the shape of a salamander. The colored cards then slot into this cutout from the top to show different colored salamanders. This was a cute and fun activity.

6. A pocket full of green leaves (paper) numbered 1-20. Ds had to put them in a pile in order to make a "nest" for a cardboard cut-out salamnder.

7. A large vocabulary-type book which lists all the things a salamander needs to be happy (mainly from the story. Underneath each flap is the reason a salamander would need the item. Eg. "moss" - "for a pillow"; "bullfrogs" - "to tell goodnight stories".

It seems we also watched a couple of Eyewitnwess videos, entitled "Amphibians" and "Ponds".

I hope this helps.

Here are some plans that build on FIAR plans. I'll see if I can photograph thelapbook and upload it in the next few days.

Katie, I love your plans! Maybe we'll revisit the Salamander Room next fall!

Elizabeth,

My thanks to you as well. I appreciate being able to compare what I tried to do with what you all know works. The Salamander Room was my first story to try and build my own trail. I must say I feel more comfortable now, I was not as off as I thought!

Kristen, I'm glad the plans were helpful. I have lapbooks for many, many FIAR books, and have just ordered a SCANNER! In the nearish future I can hopefully provide pictures if anyone needs them. I know others' pictures really helped me.

I think this was one of those really fun books that got me and family hooked on homeschooling.
