Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Used book sale today... with no A/C in the building.... not for the faint of heart , but I did find a couple of Christmas books that I am happy about.

Pancho's Pinata
Loved the colorful illustrations in this one. The story is the legend of how pinatas came to be featured in the Posada tradition.
The book was inspired by the Diego Rivera mural "La Pinata and Procession"
(1953).

A Book of Christmas by Tasha Tudor

Zounds! How is it that I have never seen this one before? It is a beautiful pop-up book with... a pop up Advent calendar on the seond double page spread... and! St. Nicholas Day and St. Lucia Day on the third double page spread. There is a little wheel to spin that makes light glow from the candles in the Lucy crown.

The remaining part of the book is the Nativity story, all in pop-up.
The copy I found is in mint condition.

The Christmas books were not really out for this sale, but I asked about them, and the ladies happily dragged out the boxes for me to dig through. I guess they felt sorry for me, sweating through a bunch of books like, "Help! I'm Trapped in Santa's Body!" (Seriously??)
so they let me have the books for fifty cents each Yeah... my big thrill for the week...

The sweat was totally worth it! That Tasha Tudor book is one of our favorites for Christmas. It's usually expensive, so it's one we try to take good care. I hope I find another someday because I know both my boys will want a copy for their family.

I'm intrigued by the other book.....

Jen-

Do you open the doors on the Advent calendar pages? Most of the ones in the copy I bought are still sealed, but I would love to see the pictures under the flaps!

The pinata book has a sweet story involving the Christmas star, the Posada and how pinatas came to be. My kids are pinata fanatics, so they will enjoy this one. Also, I like having another Posada story... we read the same two (Tomie deP's and Marie Hall Ets) every year.

I think the ending of this one could have been a bit more dynamic, but I enjoyed the pictures enough to make up for that. On a couple of the pages Our Lady of Guadelupe is peeking out of background, and Pancho has a little spotted dog that I liked. The Posada scenes in the village square are vey richly done, IMO.

I think it will be a good addition for us!
