Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're on a book binge at present and I wanted to share a treasure we read today.

Nasreen's Secret School: True Story from Afghanistan It has made a deep impression on my children. We've just finished discussing the Taliban, and how girls had to attend school in secret during the Taliban reign.

Love to hear of other Middle East titles you'd recommend.

Silent Music

Traveling Man

Nubs

Big Tiger and Christian: This is the shortened version of a German book I loved when I grew up. It is not a picture book, but a long book for children 12 and up. This is not strictly a book of the Middle East, but of China and Mongolia.

Day of Ahmed's Secret. It seems like so many Middle East books have the theme of cultural acceptance or Muslim tolerance... not that anything is wrong with that in and of itself but the area has so much more to offer! Here is a book that just jumps you right into the sights/sounds of Cairo...

Sitti's Secrets This has the traditional theme of acceptance but it's a lovely story about connecting with a far away grandparent in the Palestine and the pictures are excellent. I love the part when Sitti lets her see her hair finally...

Four Feet, Two Sandals looks promising...

and the Iraqi Cinderella story is The Golden Sandal

I really like this book - for the same reasons Ellie mentioned - no agenda. And wonderful Ted Lewin illustrations.

Yes, this is a good book, much more there than the tolerance theme. It has won several awards.

Last year there was a thread started for recommendations on this topic as well.
Middle East/ Northern Africa books

Oh, and I was going to also add that "technically" those Egypt books are not truly Middle East. So I had a hard time finding many Middle East picture books when you exclude Egypt. Iran and Iraq are really the only other countries with any number of books centered there, particularly if you are looking for more modern times. Ancient times you can find more books about those regions and also legend picture books, but the countries did not exist as now.
