Magellan? Ponce de Leon? Ideas?
There seems to be a sad lack of interesting picture books about the great explorers from Spain and Portugal... unless you want Christopher Columbus .
Anyone have any favorites? I remember learning about Balboa and Magellan in school and thinking it was all so interesting. But my library is only turning up some really dry nonfiction biographies. I feel like I am not using the right key words for my search- that there must be other books available, maybe with different titles....

Melinda, I think I got this title from Mater Amabilis:
The World's Most Daring Explorers: 38 Men Who Opened Up the World
My ds enjoyed this last year (he was 10). It is not a picture book, more of a series of non-fiction descriptions of the men and their discoveries, however it is illustrated very nicely in a Holling C. Holling style. There are a lot of detailed drawings in the margins, including maps, cultural articles, portraits, natural science depictions, etc. It is a very intriguing book and covers all the major world explorers. We loved it.
I had to purchase it because I couldn't find it in the library.

On her paper stuff blog, Jen has lists of the Garrard publishing series of books, including series about world explorers. You ,ight work through her list to see if your library has some of those titles.

Have you seen So You Want To Be An Explorer by Judith St. George? It's the same author as So You Want To Be President. My kids really enjoy her style.
Also, The Picture Book of Great Explorers by Gillian Clements.
If you can find The Conquest of The Atlantic by the D'auliare's this is a nice overview of explorers too

My girls have Children's Great Explorer Encyclopedia. They really enjoy it. Full of vibrant pictures, stories, descriptions, and facts, it takes you through the earliest of times up through the space program. Though my link is through Barnes and Noble, you can buy it through Amazon as well.

Many spanish explorers came to Texas. I have Explorers of Early Texas but I haven't started reading it aloud yet. Definitely written for schools but it does seem living.

Just a little update - We've been reading this this week and it is good, with some nice 2 color illustrations. 5-8 page chapters about each explorer. I've read one aloud and my son has read several to himself and his narrations were good. Though they are about Texas, many of the explorers are famous for explorations that include other places in North America.
There is also Little Stories of Famous Explorers by Laura Large. Here are the chapter titles:
Quote:
Across a sea of darkness [Columbus]
A struggle for the prize of the North [Peary]
Making known the greatest secret of the South [Amundsen]
Through the wildest parts of South America [Roosevelt]
A famous doctor in a northern country [Grenfell]
A white man in a dark country [Livingstone]
In a land of cold, wind, ice and snow [Macmillan]
Around the world [Magellan] |
|
|
I bought that one on abebooks last year after my son enjoyed another Laura Large book on archive- I think I bought three at once! Anyway, we haven't read it yet but it may be another option to look into.

Updating with some of the books I found about the explorers that we have enjoyed:
Who in the world was the Forgotten Explorer?
This is about Amerigo Vespucci. It's written in a very living style and has black and white illustrations. There is a whole biography series in this line.
I wish my library carried them!
History News Explorers
Written in a newspaper style format with lots of colorful pictures
What would you ask Ferdinand Magellan?
This book is written as an interview with Magellan. Great pictures.
There are several in the series
Land Ho! Fifty Glorious Years in the Age of Exploration
by Nancy Winslow Parker
This has been my favorite of all the explorer picture books we've read.
One of the first pages is a very easy on the eye chart of 12 explorers and the flags they sailed under. Very handy for keeping everyone straight.
Each explorer gets a two page spread. There are the basic facts and then there are all kinds of interesting tidbits- but the pages are not crammed with text (like some Usborne and DK books). The pictures and maps are really fun to look at, IMO.
My favorite illustration shows Balboa and how he was connected to other explorers of the time. He:
saw Columbus
knew de Soto
heard of Cabot
heard of Magellan
knew Ponce de Leon
met Cortes in a tavern in Santo Domingo
met Pedrarias (who falsely accused him of treason and caused him to be put to death.
Just cool stuff like that. Come to think of it, I really need to get a copy of this book to add to our home library
