Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ever since Mary mentioned in this thread

Thanks for the heads up on that link for Golden Gems. It's another fun, nostalgic blog. I hadn't clicked on that link. If you enjoy that blog, you would probably like the Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children's Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became An American Icon Along the Way - really interesting history of the children's book publishing market. I discovered and re-discovered some treasured authors and illustrators.

and I read this book, I've really had a new appreciation for Golden Books, of all kinds. The illustrators and illustrations themselves are worth their weight in gold.

I love First Book for Little Catholics series

Last library sale I found a boatload of the larger Golden books, like

My Big Golden Counting Book
McCall's Giant Golden Make-It Book
The Golden Encyclopedia
Big Golden Book of Poetry
The Golden Geography
The Golden Dictionary

What I also enjoy is comparing the original editions to revised. Richard Scarry has several editions. There were several books illustrated by Eloise Wilkin that illustrations were redone to include more ethnicity. I picked up another copy of Birds by Jane Werner Watson and I think this is one that was changed.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has this sickness, er...likes Golden Books.

My Big Golden Counting Book

Oh my stars!!
This was my absolute favorite book when I was little...it was BIG and I loooved it...Wow....

I found a few sweet Christmas golden books. I pick up the nice ones at thrift and garages sales even if I don't need them because I know they will give out after awhile and I want everyone to enjoy them...not just the older kids! I need that "golden" repair tape...

yeah, I have really caught the fever too...

*****LOVE**** Golden Books!

I didn't start collecting them until baby # 3 and I've been buying them as gifts too.

I really loved the book and I enjoy reading old Golden Books when I find them. I haven't really collected them though. The history is just fascinating though. What the publishers of Golden Books did really impacted the availability of books for families with children is a big way, opening the way for the picture book industry we have now, I think. So yes, I love them, too.

Dad's The One With the Pipe -- cute post to Flickr pictures of picture books with Dad smoking a pipe. Of particular note is the We Help Daddy which we just love (illustrated by Eloise Wilkin) which had to be updated several times to remove the pipe.

Chick Fil A even has a 20% discount code. The link below is Chick Fil A but to get code you then go to a Random House site. Not sure if it's worth it but thought I'd pass it on.

This is hysterical, Jenn. I looked at the flicker pictures...Dad!!! A pipe in every one. I have to go check my We Help Daddy book. I don't think he's a rampant smoker in my edition, but I just have to know

He is in mine -- every page. I think that's one of things that made it so endearing to me when I first thumbed through the pages.

My favorite Golden Book...Nurse Nancy! (Who can resist a book with her name in the title, I ask you?)

My copy (bought when I was 4) came with three very special Band-Aids inside, not plain ones but decorated ones (one had diamond shapes on it, as I recall) - this was way before Sponge Bob and Hello Kitty Band-Aids, so there was no way I was every going to use those special items on a real, bleeding wound!

I've seen this book in print recently but don't recall seeing Band-Aids attached to the inside front cover.

I very much enjoyed those flickr images - so funny. I love old picture book illustrations adn the way they convey a feel for the times. And I love the whole idea of finding a "theme" - like dad smoking a pipe, and looking for it in picture books.
