Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Looking for picture books and other living books about earthquakes. We checked out some non-living scientific ones today and would love to round out our reading.

I'm not sure if this fits the definition but it looks pretty colorful: Quakes Split the Ground Open

These have been on my wish list: Earthquake by Milly Lee and Panda's Earthquake Escape by Phyllis Perry.

and then there's Let's Read and Find Out: Earthquakes, If You Lived in the Time of the Great San Francisco Earthquake, and the Magic Tree House Earthquake in the Early Morning.

I was disappointed in this one. It's okay but I was expecting something better. But it's been awhile since I read it so can't remember exactly why I wasn't that excited about it.

Oh, no ... Do you remember what age you group you read this too? I thought it would be just enough for my younger boys without to much written detail but more expressed through the illustrations. What do you think?

I wish it had been more recent so I could remember more, Jenny. It was a few years ago so my son would have been about 9. Looking at the previews online I was able to see quite a bit of it again and the text is very short and language not that engaging. It follows one immigrant family's reaction and evacuation after the earthquake. I think I was looking for something a little bit more detailed, with a story line that helped explain the context a bit more. If one is looking for a very basic story of an experience in an earthquake for young ones it would be fine. I know I was looking at it for use as a book to cover a historical event/period more for a book list I was doing. I did put it on the list but still not a favorite as far as historical picture books.

I'm getting really picky with picture books these days so probably should not weigh to much on my thoughts. You actually can see quite a bit of it in the "Surprise me!" feature on Amazon. Which would I think give you enough to decide for yourself if it's what you are looking for. Oh, and you would have to talk with little ones about Buddhist deities since they are mentioned in the story line.

Although I've not read it, well-known author Lawrence Yep has written a book about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (something about Earth Dragon?). It sounded interesting...maybe someone has read it?

For adult/teen/advanced middle school readers, I highly recommend Simon Winchester's book, A Crack in the Edge of the World; it's an excellent nonfiction account of the same quake.
