Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This book is for all older sisters (that was me!) and anyone who is forever losing things or leaving a trail of their things wherever they go (you know who you are!). But it's also for so much more ---

Adele and her younger brother Simon wander around Paris in the early 1900s on their way home from school, stopping by many famous landmarks along the way. Alas, Simon -- who starts off with his hat, gloves, scarf, sweater, coat, knapsack, books, crayons, and a drawing he'd made -- loses all of these items one by one. Look carefully in the detailed and beautiful pen-and-ink drawings to see if you can find them, although gentle but frustrated Adele can not. The story has a happy ending, though, because Adele and Simon have many friends in the city.

Yes, I know it mentions "SCHOOL," but I think this book is a marvelous go-with for studies on France (Paris in particular) or the early 1900s. Besides the landmarks (including Notre Dame) and period dress, you'll see French flags, French pastries (eclairs), and French artists. In particular it would be delightful to read along with "Madeleine." (Attention FIAR fans!) Look very carefully on pp 12-13 and you might even catch a glimpse of 12 little girls all in a line!

As a bonus, in the back of the book are extra details about all of the places that are illustrated. Did you know the Louvre began as a fortress in 1190 to protect Paris against Viking raids?! Also, a 1907 map of Paris shows Adele and Simon's route on the endpapers of the book. I LOVE maps!!

I have BOYS and they have asked for this book repeatedly since we got it from the library a few days ago.
