Picture book ~~ Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave
2011 Caldecott Honor Book
2011 Corretta Scott King Winner (Illustrator)
Explanation of Edgefield Pottery
Here is an 1830s Edgefield jar for sale for $1,100
Key phrases/vocab/further study
~~map of South Carolina
Clay
3 types of pottery
folk art, burning wood, using ash, glaze,
kicking the wheel (versus an electric potter's wheel)
face jug (another trail not specifically Dave)
why use water?
60lbs of clay at once!
BLOG: Old Canal Pottery is interesting because Mr. Dexter is a potter living in what used to be Edgefield. He continues the Edgefield pottery tradition of the 1800s. He has a post about Dr. Abner Landrum which includes information about Dave being "inherited" by Dr. Landrum and working for his newspaper.
The Black Potter inspired by Dave's work -- portrayed Dave in movie -- has video on "How to Throw a Pot" on his site.
Illustrations are beautifully done.
Note on page 8 -- the barn has the words LIVE LIFE almost hidden on it
page 13 -- don't miss shackles hanging on the wall
pages 25-26 images of making coils
page 27 -- whose big, nice house outside window...over Dave's shoulder?
Books for futher study about Dave:
Carolina Clay: The Life and Legend of the Slave Potter Dave This book was written by Leonard Todd. He found out his family owned Dave. Info: here
I Made this Jar: The Life and Works of the Enslaved African-American Potter, Dave

I'm sure there's more trails to travel with this book.
The illustrator Bryan Collier also illustrated Martin's Big Words and Rosa. Maybe compare illustrations of all three -- what's similiar (color?) what's different?
Make jars from clay, discuss/write poetry, discuss slavery, laws against slaves reading and writing, and artists signing their work (Dave signed his name, dated, sometimes wrote poetry ON the jar)
For me, the information and quotes shared at the end of this picture book (dare I admit) were more interesting than the book. The book whet my appetite to find more information on Dave.

That is exactly what happened to me! It is a great picture book and amazingly interesting story. I'm so glad you mentioned it and added all your fabulous rabbit trail information for everyone.

Oh, I am betting your library will have it (or be very wiling to get it) as it is a 2011 Caldecott Honor book and also won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Winner for 2011. It's getting high praise.
I included it in the history through picture books compilation I am working on and hoping to post soon.

I checked this out recently to preview it (our New Books section), and thought it was absolutely fascinating...and just the kind of book that leads to a wonderful rabbit trail, because it just begs to find out more about this Dave.

Oops, hit "post" too soon. What I really liked about this book is that it took facts and pieced them together, and didn't create a fictionalized story.

Michaela, thanks for sharing all these great links. We're coming up on our study of Slavery pretty soon. This will be perfect for some trails.
We own "Rosa" so will look forward to this book .
