Please! I am teaching a K/1 class for a co-op, and we're hoping to introduce the idea of what history is by beginning with family and family history. Hopefully we can make a simple family tree with other similar activities. I love Robert Lawson's They Were Strong and Good and wonder if you all could suggest other picture books that would fit into this theme. Any ideas?

Sorry to leave this thread hanging. I meant to post sooner. Ellie's great suggestions include several of what I call immigrant stories. I have other immigrant stories of family ties that I could recommend if that would be helpful.

There is another style of picture book I think that can be very helpful for introducitng the idea of history of a location (family home) through time and the family through the generations.
Books like:
Tuttle's Red Barn - Richard Michelson, Mary Arazian (illustrator)
The House - J. Patrick Lewis, Robert Innocenti (illustrator)
The Little House Virginia Lee Burton

There is one more I'm thinking of but can't recall the name of. It's about a log house that is built by settlers then added on to and refurbished through the years by each new generation. Can anyone help me remember that one?

I didn't remember the title of "Homeplace" but I picked that up this week and just loved it! That's a perfect fit!

Another book about family and memories that I checked out this week is Bringing the Farmhouse Home by Gloria Whelan, illustrated by Jada Rowland.

Aunt Mary's Rose (Douglas Wood) is another nice picture book about family memories/traditions/history. A little boy finds out about his family history through a rose bush that has been cared for by family members through the years.

Me and My Family Tree (Joan Sweeney)- Not a memorable picture book for the art or text, but definitely a good one for this particular topic. It illustrates how to make a written family tree while going through the immediate family of the girl in the book. I think it would be helpful for this type of unit because it helps visualize a family tree.

The Kid's family Tree Book (Caroline Leavitt) - This isn't a picture book but it's a very informative children's book about geneology and family history. It explains the many different aspects of geneoolgoy and includes lots of projects for kids to do and resources to use.

Thankfully we have a wonderful county library and I've been able to find most of the books you all have suggested! Thank you!

We started our co-op last week, and so far the little ones have really enjoyed everything we've read. The favorite was probably Little Fur Family by Margaret Wise Brown. We had the kids do an activity imagining their own "little fur family" with teddy bears; that was a neat way to get the gross motor skills involved.

I'll keep looking for your help as we begin new themes for our co-op. You all are a wealth of info!
