Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is a beautiful picture book of Mary Mapes Dodge's Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates.

poverty family ice skating sister brother siblings skates race Holland doctor hardship wishes watch miracles generosity

We used the last sentence of the book for copy work / dictation last week:
In good time, Hans Brinker became one of Holland's finest doctors--and also one of the kindest. For even as a great man, he never forgot what it was to be poor, and in need.

Looks lovely, Suzanne. I recently came across an old copy of the novel at a used book sale. Looks like we can do a combo of reading the novel and the picture book .

Thank you for sharing, Suzanne. We really like the novel and have enjoyed listening to the unabridged audio while driving around, too. I just placed your recommendation on hold at the library.

Thank you Suzanne... I've been thinking about how my oldest read the unabridged version when he was 8 years old, and feeling sorry that my younger ones would NEVER have the patience or desire to do so... I don't think they would stand me reading it aloud to them ... now I can get this and read it to them! YAY!
