Picture books are a HUGE part of my life right now. I have spent hundreds of hours reading- how many? thousands?- of picture books to my kids over the past seven years. All the librarians know me and there is nothing I enjoy more than hunting down books at yard sales and thrift stores or on line.
I suspect that many of you are a lot like me.
As a new moderator in this forum, I would love to hear from you all what we could do to make this forum an even better resource for all of us book-loving mamas.
One thing I am working on is compiling a list of all of our best/favorite places to buy books. If you have a tried and true source you would like to share, please drop me a pm or post it here. I will post the list as a sticky at the top of this forum, and then the next time you are wondering where to look for a favorite book, you will have a place to start.
If you have other ideas, please don't be shy about sharing them. I am always happy to see your picture book finds posted... I come here often to make up my library lists.
You ladies are great blessing in my life... Happy Thanksgiving... and Happy Reading!

I'm not sure I am understanding your question correctly. Are you looking for ideas for this forum to make it more helpful/meaningful for us?
If so, I have a few ideas:
1. I love the threads that list picture books for a certain topic. For example, the thread is called Books about Lighthouses and then in the thread people can recommend good picture books about lighthouses or stories set in a lighthouse.
2. Saint book threads in advance of feast days. For example, picture books for a particular saint with a reminder of the approaching feast day
3. Maybe a list of the major picture book award winners after those winners are announced - Caldecot, King award, etc.
Thank you for moderating this forum. I know it takes a lot of time and I really appreciate all the resources I find here.

This is one of my favorite forums on all of 4 Real. I definitely have a soft spot for it and for picture books in general. I truly believe they speak to all ages and don't need to be relegated to the early primary grades. This is especially true of the amazing biographical and historical picture books which are so prominent in publishing right now.
Unfortunately I get distracted but I have some projects in the works for this thread. One is the chronological listing of picture books for history study. I've also been meaning to get back to the thread on favorite picture book biographies. I listed a few and then we were leaving on our long vacation and other busy-ness this fall. But I have about 80 picture book biographies checked out that I'm reviewing and wanting to post just for that thread.

I do too! Great way to keep topics together for units and to discover new books on favorite subjects. Some of those type threads end up in the Rabbit Trail forum or in individual subject forums based on the topic already. We have been considering dropping the Rabbit Trails forum and just incorporating threads on unit studies into the forum subject it best fits - that is what folks seem to do more likely anyway. Would it be beneficial to add unit study and rabbit trail activities to this type of thread?

Another great planning idea. Too bad that there aren't more picture books on saints. But would be good for those that have a book.

Anyone up for getting that information for 2009 and posting those here?

That would be great, Sylvia, a real help! Somehow I got on a list that e-mails the NY Times best childrens' picture book list every so often. I haven't investigated it fully, but I am thinking of maybe just posting the list every time I get it.
Mary, I *CAN NOT WAIT* to see your picture book time line thread. I think that will be such a helpful thread... I have been wanting to do a time line with my my dc and even bought a good one to start me off, but I've been holding off for some unknown reason. Now I know it's because I'm waiting for your list
I have been thinking it would be fun, starting after Christmas, to have one or two "book themes" each month.... maybe one saint/historical figure and one non religious topic . Erin put that bug in my ear, and I think it's a good idea. An example might be February: St. Valentine and snowflakes. Then everyone could post their best book recommendations for those to specific topics (in addition two any other great books you come across).
I really like Donna Marie's top ten Advent book thread going on right now.
I might have to "advertise" for it in another forum ... Can I do that, Mary?
