A funny story about the 1790 census. Is the census for taxes or for government representation? The people of Tunbridge, Vermont try to outsmart the tallyman!   

"Count them I must and count them I will!"

A good one for the upcoming 2010 Census. The back page has interesting facts about the history of the census in America.

Suzanne! We have this right now also - such a funny story!

Have you read any other books illustrated by S.D. Schindler? I've only recently pieced it together how many books I love he has illustrated - mostly history based ones, like Hog Music, Kurlansy's Salt and The Cod's Tale, Home on the Range: John A. Lomax and His Cowboy Songs (Deborah Hopkinson's brand new one!), Covered Wagons, Bumpy Trails, The Terrible Storm, The Big Cheese to name a few. He is quite prolific and I seem to love everything he does (without knowing he did it).

Oh my goodness, Mary! I just went to go request a few of S.D. Schindler's books because of your post a few weeks ago, and there are SO MANY!!!!! 68 to be exact. And, paging through them, I DO recognize some:
