Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My almost two-year-old is going to be a big sister in September! Any recommendations for books about a new baby? I'd be especially interested in titles that talk about helping and sharing with the new baby or that acknowledge the joint efforts of God and love between parents in bringing about the miracle.

My children are each 2 years apart. I remember really struggling to find books that were positive about the addition of a sibling. So many books gave TOO much information--like reasons to be jealous or unhappy about a new sibling.

Two books I found that were very simple and sweet are

What's Inside

and

And after that...

both by Jeanne Ashbe

For what it is worth, sibling rivalry only arrived in our house about 6 months ago --ages 7, 5, and 3. :D

The best new baby book we ever had was one we made ourselves. It was the story (with pictures!) of the older child's life-in utero (pictures of Mom pregnant or ultrasound images), an infant (getting fed, bathed, rocked, in a stroller), toddlerhood. It was written to the older child, as in, "When you were a baby, Mommy nursed you and rocked you." I included all those activities that I was sure I would be doing often with the new baby. At the end, the story stressed that he was now older and could do a lot of things (like slide, sit in a high chair, drink from a cup, say his prayers, whatever you have pictures of him/her doing) by himself. And now he was going to be a big brother! His little sibling would be like him and need a lot of care, but one day could help his sibling learn all the things he knew. He helped me put this book together, and it was absolutely his favorite book. I think it really reassured him that he was just as loved and cared for as the new baby.

What a sweet idea, Caroline.

We just added a new baby to the household--our little daughter will be three months old tomorrow. Before she arrived, we read Aliki's Welcome, Little Baby over and over again. My 2yo son and daughter love that book.

Thank you for the great ideas. I'll need to start digging through RA's baby pictures again. The story about the inspiration for Angel in the Waters is amazing.
