So, there are a bunch of us who have chickens or are getting new chicks........
I decided to repeat a rabbit trail we did five years ago when we got chickens the first time.
I just go to my library and order all that looks fun and interesting, about, or "starring" chickens.
There a lot of cute ones!
It is a fun way to get the kids ready for chickens!
Here are a few titles.........ones we read last night:
MY LIFE AS A CHICKEN by Ellen A. Kelley
Very silly and funny.
THE TWIN PRINCES by Tedd Arnold
Cute story....actually has a moral! Good for those who like kings and knights!
I will add the others as we read them........how about the rest of you?

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?
Now this was kind of an interesting book.
They asked 14 illustrators to give their version of WHY?
A few are really funny........some are strange......and some fell flat
the artwork was nice, of course
worth a quick look IF your library has it already

I love this book of the Fox and the Rooster story - there is also a version illustrated by Barbara Cooney out there (I think).
But this version features illustrations of farm animals that are now considered Heritage breeds or Rare Breeds - The featured rooster (and his hen) in the story - are Welsummmers - the hens lay beautiful brown eggs with dark speckles and the roosters are most impressive looking - if we add to our flock these are birds we will probably want to add. We lost our grand Welsummer Rooster last year.
The book has a key to all the different breeds in the back. Great book!
And here's more on our favorite poultry - Welsummers

Isn't there a Patricia Pollacco (spelling?) book called Rebchenka's Egg? (I may have the chicken's name spelled wrong too), but I know it's an enjoyable story!
Peace,
Nancy

Wings, A Tale of Two Chickens is a story about two chickens and a fox - uh oh! Not a good combination...
Click, Clack, Moo, Cow That Type has chickens in it as well, if I remember right.
The Chicken Sisters is by the author of If You Give a Mouse (Cat-Moose-Pig) a Cookie (Muffin-Pancake-Cupcake) and is equally charming.
One for you, Chari, The Egg and I. Don't forget the movie with Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray. It was the movie that introduced Ma and Pa Kettle and led to all their subsequent movies.

Mary Jane Auch has written a number of children's books featuring chickens. Most are based are based on fairy tales.
God bless,

I don't have titles but am thinking of Chicken Little / Henny Penny and The Little Red Hen. There are a lot of versions - perhaps someone has favorites they can recommend?
A short story, Rosie's Walk by Patricia Hutchins comes to mind.
We liked The Scarecrow's Hat by Ken Brown.

I think the bird in this story is a wild Goose that has been left behind with a hurt wing.

We read a lot of Little Red Hen versions a while back. Many have changed the protagonist to a different animal to fit the theme (like a burro for a southwest version). But the ones we really liked that featured the hen were:
Cook-a-Doodle-Doo - The great grandson of the Little Red Hen decides to test his culinary abilities. Predictably the dog, cat, and goose refuse to help, but iguana, pig, and turtle are more than happy to pitch in with humorous result. There are helpful side notes with actual cooking tips and information. Includes a recipe strawberry shortcake.
Out of the Egg - a twist on the Little Red Hen story with hen finding and planting, and nurturing a seed that grows into a large tree, but since no one helped she doesn't share the shade. When she tries to keep the other animals out her independent chick convinces her to share and send them home with seeds of their own.
The Little Red Hen- Paul Galdone - classic story in Galdone's homey illustrations.
The Little Red Hen- Barry Downard - digital photo manipulation makes it look like real animals dressed up and doing chores. Kids get a kick out of it.
The Little Red Hen- Byron Barton - bright blocky illustrations.
The Little Red Hen (makes a pizza)- Philemon Sturges -silly take-off of the original in which the chicken decides to make a pizza, has to fetch all the various ingredients and assemble them herself as none of the animals help. Very whimsical cut paper collage illustrations.
Little Red Hen - Jerry Pinkney - 5 time Caldecott honor winner, wonderful illustrations as you would expect. Lovely - one of my favorites.

My 3yo loved this book. Seriously loved it. It's really just a bunch of nonsense, I think, but we read it sooooo many times. Kinda fun!

Clever, Mary! That is a great idea!
I just picked up about fifty books from the library yesterday..........mostly chicken books.....with a bit of Mozart and some Magic Flute thrown in there, for good measure.
Jennifer, The Egg and I is one of my favorite books! I read about four of her books....I liked the way she writes.......even if I was unhappy with some of her life choices. And the movie is great, too......I LOVE Fred MacMurray in this movie!
I will hopefully pluck through a few tomorrow.
This is fun!

You are very punny!
In regards to the Little Red Hen books - we had fun comparing and contrasting them. Which ones had the hen sharing with the others even though they didn't help? Which were true to the original of only the hen partaking in the fruits of her labors? What other animals were in each book? (- did a graph of the frequency of those other animals).

Along Came A Dog is absolutely delightful. Great literary quality and great, entertaining portrait on chicken and farmyard life! From Daddy to 3 year old, and everyone in between, we all LOVED this book.
