Before winter is over I wanted to mention Urso Brunov and White Emperor by Brian Jacques.

My 6 and 9 yo old boys really enjoyed this story - Aidan (6) wanted me to read it over and over.

Then I found that this is the second Urso Brunov book by Jacques but I did not like the first one as much. In the first book there is a man who keeps animals in a zoo and who is not so nice but the book uses "men" as an object of fear to all the animals instead of just this one man - which would have made all the difference to me.

Anyway if you have read the first one and didn't like it - you might like this second one better - they are both beautifully illustrated.

Urso Brunov does have lovely manners!
