Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I read the most wonderful picture book the other day, which I'll use with the kids soon. It's called Homeplace by Anne Shelby.

It goes through 200 years in the history of a family and uses the house that the great, great, great grandpa built to show the change in history and the change of history of the people in the family as well. It was really quite wonderful!

I LOVED the illustrations! It could be used in a family history study as well. I just loved this book!

Hello, everybody!

We read this book this week.........it is SO wonderful! Please see if your library has it!

We found another great book which we read tonight:

WHEN THE WHIPPOORWILL CALLS by Candice F. Ransome

I special-ordered it because we hear the whippoorwill many times a day here.........I heard it this morning, for the first time this year!.........but, it realy is not about the bird......but about families having to leave the BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS when Shenandoah Nat'l Park was made into the park.......

so, for all of my dear friends in Northern VA......you must read this book. The illustrations are quite lovely!

In the sweet of Mary,

I ordered it. It arrived. It was simply lovely. I read it to Nicholas before bedtime and went to bed thinking about all the great educational possibilities it offered. The dog ate it for breakfast.

Oh Elizabeth!    I'm so sorry! WHY do dogs love books so much??? We've bought a few from the library (learned our lesson). They love the bindings!

I think I may buy this one to have in my wonderful picture book collection. I think maybe I'll make a family study with it or something.

I've been debating about what to use next year with Zach and Sarah for history, and how this will be our very last year using anything together with any of my kids, as then the two boys the year after will be in high school, and our homeschool will look much different.

I've been debating about Sonlight, World of Adventure again (IF the new one is written), Lessons from History as a guide, Dinah Zike's social studies book as a guide, or the CHC guide His Story (which I happen to have).

I'm leaning toward one or more of the guides to help me kinda *do my own thing* next year. I do like the plan of every day, but it doesn't leave me room to go off on trails or to spend time on what we're interested in. I guess I like to be more in control and free to study what the Lord wants us to. PLUS I like to be able to add on, and do something different, like this book would allow me to do, a family history unit or something.

So anyway, all that to say, the book is great, and I may decide to use it next year somewhere in our studies, probably as we study when people come to the New World to find a new life.

I need to look for the Whippoorwill book. That sounds beautiful, Chari.

My 2nd dd LOVES Homeplace. She kept checking it out of the library again and again. I finally ordered it from Chinaberry a few years ago for her birthday. She loves doing copywork from it.

Thanks for the Blue Ridge Mountains book suggestion, Chari. It's always fun to read about something particular to our area.

We finally read Homeplace yesterday. It was beautiful. I cry easily--happy, sad, whatever--and I got "happy tears" (as my family calls them) reading this book. Thanks for the recommendation!

I ordered Homeplace from the library and we read it yesterday. It was wonderful. I am probably going to buy it, it definitely should be in our library. Thanks for the suggestion.
