Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I get so excited when I learn that an author of illustrator lives near us. I start dreaming of ways to con them into meeting with us.    Good thing I have 5 children under the age of 7 or I would spend my time as a Picture-Book-Author-Illustrator-STALKER!

I thought Deborah Hopkinson lived in Walla Walla, WA, but then I found out she's in Corvalis, OR . But, that's not too far for her to drive, is it???

And, Ted and Gloria Rand lived a mere 15 minutes from us.

I think I heard that Eric Kimmel lives in Portland. But, I'm not sure about that.

I remember Jenn and Rachel May met Tomie dePaola not so long ago.

Have you or dc met any authors or illustrators? Who? Where? Please, do tell!!!!!   And, we want all the gory details.

I wonder where she really is ... her blog lists her as Portland - even closer for you. I would love to meet her. You should look for her NW appearances and stalk her there. Maybe we could stalk her together when I'm up there next fall.

Very cool about the Rands. I wonder if they would do a booksigning/presentation for your homeschool group?

We have met Felicia Bond, Eric Carle, and though he is not a picture book author, Brian Jacques. These were all at book signings. I most remember the Felicia Bond one because it was the first I ever took the kids to. My oldest (now 20) was probably 4. His favorite book at the time was Poinsettia and the Firefighters. It was very sweet meeting her - she stamped a pic of the give a mouse a cookie bookies in this books with her autograph. The Eric Carle signing was so crowded we didn't really get to meet him. Brian Jacques was fun, too. He's very personable and both the boys were big Redwall fans at that point in their lives.

I personally know Julie Danneberg. She is a member of the parish we used to attend. She and I worked together as teachers for the preschool religious ed. program when our older children were wee little ones still. At that time she wasn't an author and it's been several years since I've seen her. I keep saying to myself I'm going to give her a call and see if she will do a little program for our homeschool group. Her historic series on women of the west is really interesting and would be a fun basis for a talk. The website doesn't look like it's been updated recently as her latest book, Cowboy Slim has been out for awhile. I've recommended it before. It's a cute cowboy book and informational about cowboy poets.

We regularly attend Swancon, the local Science Fiction convention, so we've met a number of authors we love to read:-) (Sean Williams, Garth Nix, Lois McMaster Bujold, Charles de Lindt, Connie Willis, Elizabeth Moon, Mercedes Lackey, Robert Silverberg... dh has met Terry Pratchett even:-) )

Shaun Tan is a regular (or has been, I think he's moving to Melbourne?)

As a child I met Margaret Mahy—I even got her autograph, although I didn't have a book with me:-( I was _so_ excited:-)

DD and I recently met Tomie de Paola. He was doing a book signing in a local Barnes and Noble. I think he is in our area fairly often, because he lives a few hours north of us.

It was exciting to meet him, as he's one of dd's favorite writers.

WHat a fun thread, Suzanne.

We've met a few. I'll try to remember who we've met and return to this when I get back. We're headed to the library this morning for the summer reading kick-off.

Not a picture book author but close...We saw John Erickson of Hank the Cowdog fame when we lived in NV. He was at a National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Turns out, relatives on my mom's side of the family are his neighbors in TX. When they heard that we were fans, they asked him to autograph some books for us and my great aunt sent them to us as gifts .

Love,

This is utterly depressing. No one, and I mean no one comes to Huntsville, Alabama!    I must be content to live vicariously through all of you!

Mary, You've met Brian Jacques????!!!!!

And, people have met Tomie de Paola????!!!!!

I would embarrass myself in such a huge way if we met them. I can just see me thrusting the children forward, books in hand, gushing in incoherent sentences... Perhaps it's best that they don't generally make it here.

We met Jan Brett a few years ago at a Borders books book signing for "Honey, Honey, Lion."

She was WONDERFUL!

The children were all there and she told them how fortunate they were to have each other as siblings. she was so gracious and kind!

Tomie, Brian, Eric????? I am so incredibly jealous now!!!

My daughter wrote a letter to Mr. de Paola months ago and expects a response every day. I have tried to explain to her that he can't possibly respond to every single letter he gets but she has her heart set on it. Maybe I should try to get someone to send a letter to her pretending to be him?

So, how do you all find out about these opportunities to meet famous authors? If we wanted to try to see someone, where would we begin?

I just saw that Cynthia Rylant also lives in Portland. Maybe we can add her to the Portland picture book stalking list.

Since they are usually associated with local bookstores, you can check with them to see how they publicize upcoming author's book signings. Most of the best book signings here are at our independent bookstores. One large indy bookstore publishes their list of weekly signings each Sunday in the entertainment section of the newspaper. Others have electronic newsletters they send out periodically. Or if you frequent the bookstores, you'll often see postings up for the upcoming events. You can also check the websites of the authors you are interested in. They usually have a tour or schedule link so you can see if they are coming to your area. Authors who have new books coming out will frequently do tours so if you hear promos for a new book check that author's site.

When I was a kid I babysat for Nancy Shaw, author of Sheep in a Jeep. She had nice kids.

So, I rec'd an email back from my latest stalking efforts of Deborah Hopkinson.

She lives in Portland. She may be up here sometime in the next year for a book signing and/or to visit a school....for her new book Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek. She'll know more in the fall. She said she'd definitely consider meeting our HS group if the logistics work out .

She has a full-time job besides writing, so she doesn't travel as much as other writers.

Living in Key West we've spotted some writers/illustrators out and about, and attended a few signings (accidently, actually. I kept wondering why the place was so crowded )

Judy Blume (at cafe, reading to self, she's ancient)
Carl Hiassin (book signing for HOOT at bookstore right next to the movie theater for opening night for the movie)
Eric Carle (unexpected, loads of little kids at book store, he seemed kind and very patient)

There's too many to list, our library actually compiles a pamplet of who is in town each month just so you can keep your eyes peeled for them.

I've met Mary Engelbreit--she thought Fiona was a cute baby, of course!--and Philip Pullman (before the God-killing book came out!), who was a charming fellow and had some good writing advice. He raised an eyebrow when I had him sign book 1 to my daughter--if only I had known! I guess he did know what kind of ending he had in mind though. I ended up cutting out the dedication he'd written and tossing the book out after book 3 was published.

Suzanne, I am pretty sure Demi lives in Carnation and attends the Catholic church there, but I don't hear much about her making author appearances. I love her artistic style though.

My other favorites I'd love to meet: Kinuko Craft, Angela Barret, Peter Collington, Jonathan Allen, Lisbeth Zwerger, Paul O. Zelinsky, Ruth Sanderson.

WHAAAAT? Demi lives in Carnation? Probably not very appropriate to STALK before/after Mass, now is it?    That would be a new low

We met Tomie DePaola and well........the kids thought he was great because they were mezmorized by his presence. I, on the other hand, saw him flip out on a child because they wouldn't move aside to let him through the crowd. I tried so hard to erase the memory and make excuses for him (Oh, he's probably tired.) but it just bummed me out.

He did get his composure quickly, but it's made me leary to meet people I adore from afar!

He signed our books and took a picture with us. I still think he's great as a writer and illustrater. Should I have posted this....I didn't mean to put a damper on things

Well, it could be a useful for other parents to have an idea what they might expect. It did happen in public. What do you mean by "flip out" though?

I always feel awkward about these sorts of events and I think my 6-year-old might be too sensitive for them. (I guess the disappointment could be a learning experience but we don't have time for every "learning experience" right now...) He was crying after an event with local symphony orchestra players when they didn't call on him when he finally put his hand up during the q&a.

Just found out that Patricia Polacco is going to give a talk and have a booksigning at our great local bookstore next month. I hope to attend with the kids - though I'm guessing it will be really packed.

Hey, Suzanne, did you ever hear any more back from Deborah Hopkinson about visiting your local group?
