O.K. Ever since Ruth mentioned she is LOVING "A Picture Perfect Childhood" I cannot get the thought of purchasing it out of my head! (I even tried to talk my sons into chipping in on it for my birthday, but they wondered WHY they would BUY me a b-day present. Oh well.) Is there a 'sneak peak" of it somewhere to help cement my purchase decision? I read the reviews on amazon and they all sounded great, but I have to be careful what I spend these days, so I wanted to see what it was like before purchasing it. Is there a site that shows a little of it in more detail? I am so spoiled with "one click shopping", but I can't do that anymore.
Thanks for any tips. Oh, and I guess what I am wondering is if it is like "Honey for a Child's Heart" (which I own) and things like that, or is it something different? Just wondering.

It's better than Honey for a Child's Heart. It's worth the price.
Cay has a sampling here

Unfortunately I can't compare directly as it's been many, many years since I read Honey for a Child's Heart, but I do highly recommend Cay's book in general. I wrote a review here in case your interested in more specifics. What I really like (that I don't recall from Honey for a Child's Heart) is that is has such a variety of theme lists. I love to teach and read picture books by theme/topic to send us on rabbit trails and this book is a good resource for that. One of my favorite features of A Picture Perfect Childhood is the monthly listing of picture books to correspond with each day. That alone is worth the price for me.

Mary's assessment is spot on. In my opinion it is better than Honey...the lists are categorized for various themes. The essays in the beginning of the book just give you the warm fuzzies and make you realize how much you can bring to your child's life through picture books. I love it!
Ruth, you're a brave woman to part with this book even if for a little bit.

Kim,
For you, and anyone else who is interested in a "sneak peek" , you can go here to see inside the book.
I updated it with the March historical list, March Cooking with Literature (Bread), and the Petit Fours for Mothers.
Enjoy!

Thanks Ruth!!! I can't wait to finally look at it since all the reviews are so positive!! I will be taking the kids if the weather is nice, so maybe we can pour over the book together!! Already, I liked the Silk study of picture books I saw on one of the blogs that Cay has in the book. I had just seen a show the other day on WETA about making silk and dying silk etc and how there was a legend associated with the secrets being smuggled out of the country. So, it all sounds neat!
Hope you have been doing well. We are loving this weather!
Thanks to everyone for the reviews and for the sneak peak, Cay. That is what I was looking for.

Ruth, I am so glad you are bringing a copy of the book to show Kim. The book truly speaks for itself, and, when you see it, you will know why it is different.
I was surprised to find so very many new titles. This is definitely not a rehashing of resources we all know already. I also love the many categories Cay has put together with recommendations for everything from teaching history to cooking or pursuing specific interests like dollies or gardening.
Perhaps my favorite part was Cay's own story at the beginning--so real and honest!

Kim, did you get a chance to see the book? Just to clarify, so you're not looking for something that you won't find there - I think the picture book silk study you saw was on my blog. That book list and study was something I put together from picture books we had discovered earlier and wasn't from a book list in Picture Perfect. I linked to Cay's blog since she had just discovered one of the books as well and was having people add it to the China list in PPC.
Cay and I have discussed this before - no listing of books is going to ever be complete or really include every possible theme that one could desire to study. What she hopes the book will do is provide a starting point and be an impetus to find and discover other books and develop themes and lists in our own homes beyond the book. I already love to do that - I think that is why Cay's book hit so close to home for me. It such a nice reinforcement that this is valuable and an exciting way to teach. Hopefully we can all share our new book finds together. That's why I love this forum!

I want to reiterate what Mary said here. In picture books my family has found a rich, rich, rich mother-friendly/child-blessed way of reinforcing and enhancing life lessons, school lessons, relationship lessons, heart lessons, etc.
Picture books go hand-in-hand with Charlotte Mason's decree to keep lessons down to 15-20 minutes.
Picture books are totally user-friendly and are too often passed over as "twaddle" for search of a "higher education". I really hope that PPC is much more than just a "book of lists". Before each section, I wrote an essay of sorts on why I was offering each listing so that it would be much more than "just a book of lists". I hope the book speaks to a multitude of parents and opens many covers of picture books.
