Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i am embarrassed to admit that I never read the Little House books when i was young. I want to read them with my dc but they are probably still too young. DS 4 and dd 3. I know there are many younger versions but I dont know where to begin. Can anyone please tell me their favorite versions.

I read the Little House books to my ds when he was two. He loved hearing the "Ma and Pa stories." The first book is Little House in the Big Woods and it is very simply written (they all are, but this one especially) and Mary and Laura are probably five and six years old--maybe even a bit younger. I don't think you need to bother with any sort of abridged versions (if that's what you are considering). There are stories about animals, making maple syrup, making butter. It's a great book and there are beautiful drawings every couple of pages. I would start there and keep going if your kids are into it. You will probably love reading them, especially later in the series. You can stop and pick it up later when the kids are older but I would bet that you end up reading the whole thing and then doing it all over again in a few years when your kids are older. Or maybe they will read them on their own. I really think that read alouds are fantastic at this age. They expose the kids to good language and teach them to sit still. It gets us moms into the habit of reading aloud. My son sometimes will play with some simple toy while I read and I often wonder if he's paying attention but then he'll suddenly produce some detail that shows he's listening more than I thought. Even my 17mo dd is starting to "get it" and at least leaves us alone during read aloud time. Sometimes she even plops in my lap and listens along!

I think I'm sort of rambling but my main point is: go for it! These are great books and you will all enjoy them.

Susan

I tried reading the Little House books to my 6 and 4 year old daughters and lost their attention pretty quick. For now we are sticking with the picture book series and absolutely love them. The illustrations are lovely and the girls really identify with Mary and Laura. I plan to read the unabridged versions to them when they get just a bit older. I'm sure they'll feel like they are revisiting old friends.

When my oldest was about 3 1/2 I did start reading the Little House series to him, but he had an incredible attention span and comprehension that none of my others have had at that age. So I guess what I'm saying is it might not be too young for some children, but for many others a few more years would be better. By knowing your own children and what kind of attention they have to longer read-alouds that can help you decide the age to start.

I second what Sarah said about the picture book series. While they are abridged , they still are well done and the illustrations are wonderful and engaging. Each book is based on a chapter out of one of the first couple of books. They are self standing so it doesn't matter that they are only a chapter and can be read in any order.

I've been reading the series to my 8, 6 and 4 year-old, and my 4 year-old loves them. My 2 year-old, not so much
