Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Picture Books in our home are far out numbered by chapter books. I really want to collect more picture books.

We have a few titles from the FIAR list,(not many) but I've just been looking at Ami's list from homeschhol share and we have only one title

Which ones do you all think are absolute musts. Or at least ones to start with.

Hmmm...all things Jan Brett and, of course, THE booklist . There are lots more, but that should keep anyone's budget out of whack for awhile.

I am a member of a yahoogroup called bookbargainsonline
A Christian homeschooling mother of 10 offers recommendations and summaries of various books (like FIAR ones) found at bookcloseouts.com Sometimes she offers free shipping too. I have found many books, especially hard covers, at reasonable prices and she has a monthly coupon that will take $5 of a $35 order.

Just though I'd share,
Nicole

Also, if you don't mind paperback books, you could register with Scholastic Books as a homeschooler. They then send you any of the catalogues you want to receive from any or all of three book clubs (Scholastic, Troll/Carnival, and Trumpet). This is one of the ways that I have built our home library. They have a mixture - many great books with lots of twaddle mixed in. Each month I go through about 8-10 catalogues and order only the best of the classics. I have gotten many wonderful paperback picture books for between 95 cents up to $5 or so. Also, if your order totals more than $15, you pay no shipping. That's a huge benefit, I think.

I was introduced to many of the picture books I have come to love through Five and a Row. One example is __Miss Rumphius__. Another would be __Mirette on the Highwire__. I also love Tomie De Paola's picture books. My girls really enjoy(ed) all of the Angelina Ballerina books. I just got up and went to look at the shelf where I keep my very favorite picture books. Based on what I saw with a quick look, I would also recommend books by Robert McCloskey, Virginia Lee Burton, Eric Carle, and Jane Yolen. Finally, we love the "My First Little House" picture books.

Erin,

Have fun adding to your home library. I am envious ( in a good way) of all the great great authors you are going to disover!! It is such a wonderful feeling to meet a new friend in a book.

Here is a few authors we have enjoyed--Jim Aylesworth, Harriet Ziefert, Tasha Tudor, Eric Carle and Janell Cannon.

Cay Gibson has a tremendous book called Literature Alive! and a website were each month she spotlights a new author. I will post her website soon...I need to dash!!

Marybeth and Irene,
Thank you for the authors names. I checked them out at our local library, I thought it would be a good idea to borrow them first. Our library has finally got their catalogue online As we have so many branches the books are all spread out and hardly anything is on the shelves if you just go in.

Would you know it, out of Irene's suggestions the library on had five Jan Brett's books and Eric Carle had 17. Actually I was surprised to find any. But with Marybeth's list I hit jackpot Our library actually has titles from all authors mentioned although there are only two Tasha Tudors.

Thanks I'm off to reserve books!

Erin,

Have fun!! I think you are very wise to investigate which authors click with your family before you spend $$$. Some authors people suggest don't get rave reviews in my house and vice versa. I take several booklists to the library with me and try to hunt down different authors each time. Yesterday we went to a library in anotehr town and found many more Jane Yolen books. Yeah!!!
My ds doesn't care much for the Tasha Tudor books but am hoping our new little one may.

Well the library rang today to say that some of the books I reserved are in! Surprisingly the librarian raved about the Janelle Cannon books!! This is a first. Our librarians don't seem to get excited about books.

I'm now very intrigued to see them.

Congrats Marybeth! My bro/sil adopted 2 little boys from Guatemala back in 2003 -- not brothers, but within 3 or 4 months of each other. They now live in Colorado and the boys are thriving -- of course, it cuold be the eght "stair-step" siblings they inherited with the adoption !

Good luck and we'll keep you in our prayers....
Blessings!

Well many of the books I reserved came in. I was in at the library booking out 45 bks at one time The librarians were remarkably patient.

So far we've read a Jan Brett book, we loved her pictures and the story was really nice too. All about a hedgehog and mittens.

Jim Aylesworth book and pictures were nice also and Janelle Cannon was a big hit. I don't know what I was expecting but her books were a really pleasant surprise. We read one about a baby hyena. It was really nice to have something different.

Harriet Ziefert wasn't such a hit although dd4, said that she liked it "It was just my age"

I'll let you know more as we read. Thanks so much
