Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My children and I bake desserts and breads for the people from our church to bring when they go into the city to feed the hungry at a soup kitchen. I would love to find a picture book that gives an idea of who goes to eat there, how the kitchen works, etc. My dc are too young to go. Though I may ask the coordinator yet again.
We were baking cookies yesterday and they were asking more questions. Who eats there? Do people go who may not be homeless? Are there kids there?
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas....
Anne

Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen" is a picture book about a boy whose Uncle Willie takes him to help at a Soup Kitchen on his day off from school. It is based on "CHIPS" (Christian Help in Park Slope) a Brooklyn NY Soup Kitchen. When the book was first published you could recognize the kitchen & dining area and some of the characters.
Hope it's helpful!

Thanks and welcome, Mary Anne! Just curious, are these the same illustrations for this edition?

Also, not about a formal soup kitchen, but I think An Orange for Frankie is nice fit. The story may be too long for very young children but just looking at the pictures, mama can tell the story about how the family feeds the needy from their own home.

Love,

Thanks for the Welcome    !!

The cover looks the same as the copy I used to have.   I was a volunteer at CHIPS when the book was first published, and I gave copies (which were autographed with a paw print from Underfoot - the Soup Kitchen cat) to all of my nieces & nephews and received positive responses.

I no longer have my copy as Ben next door borrowed it to bring to his Yeshiva class and it never returned. The teacher requested that he donate it to the class library and I did get a lovely thank you note.

The author/illustrator had been a volunteer at CHIPS. I thought that she did a great job of portraying what the soup kitchen looked like until it was renovated in the late 90's. Some of the characters such as Willie, George, Brother Michael & Underfoot are based on volunteers. I really liked how she explains that the people who come to eat are our GUESTS, but I have to admit that my attraction to the book is influenced by the fact that I had a connection to CHIP when the book was first published.

Another book that includes a soup kitchen is Ann McGovern's The Lady in the Box. The soup kitchen is not the main feature of this picture book; but, it is a part the story, in which two children meet and try to help a homeless woman.
