Can someone help me "rediscover" an old childhood favorite? The story was adapted from the fairy tale The Fisherman and His Wife. The version I had was probably printed by Scholastic in the 1970s (dating myself). The illustrations made an impression on me because of the different scenes with the sea getting higher, darker and "madder". I can't remember the title, although it would seem to be the same one as above.

The ones listed in Amazon are not the correct edition. The pictures were simple, not too many colors. I almost want to say that the illustrations remind me of Five Chinese Brothers...It's not Wanda Gag, either, although that edition looks promising.

Anyway...if I could just see a picture I'd know right away...any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Could it be The Magic Fish by Freya Littledale. It is listed as published by Scholastic c1967 so fits the time frame. I remember the book too and can picture it my mind. (We probably got the same Scholastic order ) The name Magic Fish rang a bell for me. I looked on the net and all I can find as far as pictures of this book are from a 1980's edition and the illustrations don't fit the discription you are looking for. Probably the earlier edition had a different illustrator. Good luck.

THANKS MARY! You helped me find the missing piece, I believe.

I was thrown by Freya Littledale being the author...the new edition isn't correct...but when I looked further in Amazon I found a clue to what you are saying: Matt Hetling says the 1967 edition is illustrated by Ed Arno.

And although I can't see inside the pages, I believe this might be it: The Magic Fish.

I found a copy on ebay for The Magic Fish by Freya Littledale, but illustrated by Ed Arno. I enjoy seeing the pictures again...they are only two color, black and blue.

As I searched for this artist, I found out his fame is mostly due to his work in The New Yorker. There is one other children's book he illustrated, The Gingerbread Baby which I hope to find. I like his style...it's simple line art.
