Dear Ladies,
I am contemplating buying this book about Basho. However it is very expensive, even used ($10). I would like to use it with my two dcs (5 and 7) for FIAR/Tour the continents and I am wondering whether its worth buying or just paying $1.50 to get it through interlibrary loan. (I can get Tim Myer's Basho and the Fox at my library.) I am afraid the idea of haiku is going to be way over their heads!
Anyone who has or has used this book, I'd love to have your thoughts!
Thanks,
CK

It is one of my all-time favorites!I would have it on my "must haves" list, for sure.

Thanks for this input Theresa. I'll keep it on my list of "to buy" and see when we can squeeze it in!

I had gotten this book, but was saving it until my oldest was a bit older... but lo & behold, the most recent National Geographic magazine we got had a beautiful spread all about Basho, including a modern-day map with his journeys marked, and examples of the haikus written in Japanese. I removed these pages from the magazine & will laminate them & keep them with the book - which I'll read to my son soon!

I am so glad that this came up! I was looking through FIAR yesterday trying to pick some books for the next few weeks. I saw Grass Sandals and (as in the past), thought, "We'll look at that one in the spring." But I have never managed to actually get to it. I am definitely putting this on the list for early March (and by then, I should be able to check out the National Geographic from the library too). I've never read this book!

CK,
Maybe you've already used these titles, but A Pair of Red Clogs (Volume I) and Grandfather's Journey (Volume I) are also set in Japan. Homeschool Share has lessons for Little Oh and Crow Boy (both set in Japan).

I enjoyed this book and the illustrations by Demi are just gorgeous but it was a little over my kids' heads at 8 and 6. I think that they will enjoy it as they get older.

Thanks for the heads up on the NG magazine. My dad just got us a subscription for Christmas and the Jan. and Feb. issues arrived last week. I have to admit I hadn't looked at it closely at all (though I read the "Drying of the West" article). We did a little Haiku study with poetry about two years ago so time for a revisit. In addition to Grass Sandals and Tim Myer's Basho and the Fox, Tim Myer also has Basho and the River Stones.
