Our foray into sign language has yielded a new favorite alphabet book. There are beautiful drawings of hands signing each of the 26 letters, with alphabetic pictures intertwined. For instance, the sign for "a" is a fist; grasped in the fist are some stalks of asparagus. The color drawings are lovely. My eldest is the artist in our family and this is a book he brought home from the library when instructed to "find something good on sign language." He was captivated because in his opinion "hands are really hard to do." I ordered the book for him (he's 16) because I know he'll spend hours with his pencils, copying those hands. His little siblings like the book too  . You can see it here:

We like 'M is for Mitten' by Annie Appleford. It's all about our
state. (Michigan is shaped like a mitten.) Lots of places and
things we are familiar with.

I love A Handmade Alphabet, too, Elizabeth!
Also, the Michigan one you mention, Bridget, is part of a series called Discover America State by State from Sleeping Bear Press. Ours is C is for Centennial (because Colorado became a state in 1876). They are still working on these so some states have not yet been published. They are really fun. In addition to the states they publish ones for the Canadian provinces and also a bunch of other interesting titles/topics, like a couple of my favorites B is for Buckaroo: A Cowboy Alphabet and H is for Home Run: A Baseball Alphabet. I figured you'd like that one Angie. Elizabeth, they have K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet but I haven't personally seen that one.
Two of my other favorites are:
Antler, Bear, Canoe: A Northwoods Alphabet Year I love woodcut illustrations.
The Butterfly Alphabet It is a beautiful book and amazing that they found all the letters in patterns on butterfly wings.

I really love alphabet books, and I keep them even though we don't need them anymore. Here are a few other I pulled off the shelves:

We just received Letters from Heaven: An Illuminated Alphabet and we really like it. The boys are using it for inspiration while illustrating their Easter notebooks.
Eating the Alphabet is another favorite.

I grew up with a book called First ABC: An Educational Picture Book text by Nancy Larrick, illustrations by Rene Martin. It was published in 1959, 1962. It's a tall book, with a full sized illustration for each letter. I got our old family's copy first -- scribbled on, duct tape on the binding, but our son loved it. So I found a nicer copy in Ebay. The illustrations are just so stunning...very realistic and detailed. Even as an adult I could look for hours.

Our family's favorite is Alison's Zinnia by Anita Lobel. "Alison acquired an Amaryllis for Beryl." Each page features a beautiful color illustration of the flower mentioned on that page. The publisher is Mulberry Books.`

We just borrowed from the library Apricot ABC which my ds really liked. I, of course, returned it and didn't write down the author. I wanted to post it before I forgot it.
Another very fun ABC book is Agent A to Agent Zby Andy Rash. Dh and Ds read this book almost nightly. They love to pretend to be on secret missions so this spy book is very appropiate for them!
