Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just had to share my find. I was out hunting thrift stores and a used homeschooling materials store, mostly hoping to find baskets or such for my new found enthusiasm for Montessori. Well browsing anywhere that has books is dangerous for me. I walked out of every place with a pile of books (admittedly 25 cents to $1 each).

One book on my list was The Three Bears because I couldn't find it at the library (I know we have a pathetic library - they supposedly have it in there somewhere but it is always checked out). Anyways I found a copy of it and scooped it home. When I got home and looked at it more closely, I was absolutely stunned. It is gorgeous and .... It is actually a full reproduction of the original (original pictures and all). The story was such a fun read. My 4 yo and I sat and snuggled on the sofa and we were riveted to the pictures and loved the story. He very, very naturally ended up doing a narration afterwards telling me he liked the bears and that he knew it wasn't right to go into peoples houses uninvited and use their things ... on and on. This version of The Three Bears was better than any version I have ever heard in my life. I could just flip through it and savor its beauty. I am feeling so thankful!

The book does not have an author or editor. The title is The Story of The Three Bears. On the back cover it has the line: "This book is a replica of the antique original." There is a copyright insignia but no date followed by B. Shachman & Co., Inc.
11 East 26th St. N.Y., N.Y., 10010
No. 3045 printed in Hong Kong.

Here is a sample of some of the wording:

"The three bears stared for some time out of the window from whence Goldilocks took flight; and though at first they were quite angry with the little girl and ready to scold her, they soon got over these bad feelings, remembering that it is wise to

                BEAR AND FORBEAR."

(Bear and Forbear are in all caps but the first letter of each word is larger than the others.)

They then continue talking about the little bears delight in the how pretty Goldilocks was and how Little Bear was proud of how she had eaten his porridge, sat in his chair and slept in his bed, but then the last part of the story ends thus:

"Why, he actually hugged himself with delight! But as this feeling might not last long, I should advise you not to pry into other people's affairs; and if you go in the woods keep away from the house of

             THE THREE BEARS

Even thought they would do you no harm."

The actual color pictures are absolutely vivid and the book sometimes has full page spreads of nothing but picture. Instead of being just rectangular, the top of the book is shaped to follow the bears outlines, so every page seems to have a silhouette of the three bears peeking over the top.

I feel absolutely giddy in having this book. I'll never ever be satisfied with any other version of The Three Bears again!!!
