Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi, we're new to hsing and my son isn't a big reader. However, I have found that he really can identify with a character full throtle if allowed. Considering he has Asperger's, I like that he can learn about and explore human nature (rather than all his energy and attention on his topic of preference). He really enjoyed The Box Car Children when we read it a couple years ago. He doens't like the series because mysteries make him feel nervous and anxious (the suspence is very uncomfortable for him). I've been reading the Tom Playfair series written in the 1920's I believe, by a wonderful priest who had a flair for weaving in good character values with a fun story. The sacraments, devotion to the Sacred Heart, love of Our Lady are all written in as efforlessly as one reads about anything today. These particular stories are too advanced for his comprehension now (he's almost 12) but I LOVE the way they value good characters in a fun, Tom Sawyer kind of childhood (but a Catholic Tom - one who learns the value of obedience and hard work and true friendship). They are a bit on the hokey side for today's standards maybe, but hey, I like them! And they're perfect for my son. Does anyone know of any other stories that really embrace Catholic values(or even Christian, but I like that the sacraments and other devotions are just "normal, everyday stuff")??

Have you heard of any of Hilda van Stockum's books ? My boys, of all ages (3-15 at the time,) really enjoyed The Bantry Bay series and The Mitchell series.
They both are fun stories of the adventures of Catholic families and the everyday scrapes, etc. that children get into. The faith is woven throughout the stories (in one of the Bantry Bay books, the children are in town and the bells ring to remind everyone to say the Angelus.)

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

How about the Outlaws of Ravenhurst? Great, Catholic story.

My dh and dd(11) and ds(9) just finished a series called "Dragons in Our Midst" written by a Christian homeschooling dad of seven named Brian Davis. They couldn't put it down and it had lots of religious symbology. Be ready to pull out the Bible to explain some things!

Bethlehem books has many great adventure stories full of strong virtuous characters.
