It occurs to me we don't do poetry as often as we should -- I try to incorporate it into whatever historical era we're studying but the kids are usually bored with my choices. So I need help! KellyinFL or anyone?
How about some March poetry? Please leave your suggestions for books or actual poems in this thread. We'll probably do a notebook on poetry and make it pretty with March/Spring pictures.
It might even be nice to have a Poet of the Month type of thing, like we have the Artist and Composer studies, which has really helped us a lot! What do you gals think?
Thanks!!

PS Lenten poetry very much welcome too!

All I can think about poetry-wise for March are weather poems where the weather is blowing, snowing, raining ... you know. That TS Eliot poem is huge! What age are you wanting these poems to be appropriate for?
Written in March by Wm Wordsworth goes like this:
The Cock is crowing,
The stream is flowing,
The small birds twitter,
The lake doth glitter
The green field sleeps in the sun;
The oldest and youngest
Are at work with the strongest;
The cattle are grazoing,
Their heads never raising;
There are forty feedling like one!
Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
And now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The ploughboy is whooping ~ anon ~ anon
There's joy in the mountains;
There's life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
Blue ski prevailing;
The rain is over and gone!
Who has Seen the Wind? by Christina Rossetti
Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
I found both of these in one of my absolute *favorite* poetry books (mostly because of how it is organized) by Helen Farris, Favorite Poems Old and New. I'll scan the other one later and see whether I come up with anything exciting to add.
Not exactly Lenten, but the Annunciation is coming up. The Magnificat poem/prayer would be a great thing to memorize.
Thank you so much, Stef, for reminding me of poetry. It, like structured art classes in this house, tends to get pushed to the side until it is so buried under *school* that we forget it completely. Besides, it will be fun to see what we all find poetry-wise from month to month or season to season.

How about Irish poetry, since it's the month of St. Patrick?

Tina, thanks!!
The TS Eliot one is for my 15-yo, but I'm also looking for poems for the youngers.
Just today, my 5-yo came up with
I am a baby
I cannot speak
I don't know why
I am too sick
She's not sick, but I guess she enjoys trying to rhyme, so I better get her some good examples quick!
Oooh, and thanks, Jenn! Any specific ones you like?

Look what we found (thanks for the idea, Jenn!) -- by Joseph Mary Plunkett:
I see His Blood Upon the Rose
I see his blood upon the rose
And in the stars the glory of his eyes,
His body gleams amid eternal snows,
His tears fall from the skies.
I see his face in every flower;
The thunder and the singing of the birds
Are but his voice—and carven by his power
Rocks are his written words.
All pathways by his feet are worn,
His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea,
His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn,
His cross is every tree.
