Are there any graphic novels that could qualify as living literature? We are into super heroes right now thanks to some comic books findings (courtesy of Lissa at the Bonny Glen ). We are into Superman, Batman and Justice League (this one mostly DVDs) In searching for comic books I have come accross graphic novels but don't know much about them. Do you know of some that are good and appropriate reading for a 9yo and even for a 13yo?

Thanks,

Natalia

My 9 yob has a Pope John Paul II comic.

Also, as far as living books go ... well, I certainly don't like to admit it ... we like Calvin and Hobbes for their vocabulary, imagination, and art. I am *not* thrilled with some of the attitudes that come across, but my kids went through a sort of adjustment period and are OK.

Another series we like is Tintin, for the vocabulary, the geography, and the occasional history ... except that the Captain drinks a LOT and is occasionally drunk.

Seems that comics are like movies. There might be a lot of good in them, but there's always that element of bad.

Anyway, those are our recommendations.

Ah, Tina, you took the words right out of mouth. We love all the Calvin & Hobbes (though I have the same issues, and probably the same discussions with my children that you do!) and Tintin (likewise). Both books have very extensive vocabularies and are most creative.

In the super hero arena, we like the OLD compendium volumes of SpiderMan-I think there are four that come in book form. My boys (and girls) have read them cover to cover. THey are much better than the new stuff. Even my immature 11yods told me that he didn't like the new Spiderman graphic novels-too "dark and creepy" (in my words, I'd say they were kindof disturbing). But the old ones? Bring'em on!

Also...now here's where I'm blushing , my children all love Archies! We got started on these when we were in a used bookstore and the owner mentioned that all the Archies get nabbed up by the Mennonites. They are basically clean (the Archies, that is, and probably the Mennonites, too, for that matter )though there IS a lot of boyfriend/girlfriend stuff, and dating, so that's something you need to consider and decide if you want to delve into that-but OTOH you also have nice, clear character types: selfish Veronica, cleancut Betty, goofy Jughead etc...they haven't changed---I always appreciate it when the characters are straightforward---none of this Good-Guy-Who-Is-Really-the-Bad-Guy confusing stuff. Anyway, Archie "ain't" great lit, but, but it's fun.

Thanks Kelly and Tina.

We love Calvin and Hobbes, Tintin and Asterix. And we have discovered the Showcase edition comic books. They are reprints of the old comic books.

I was looking for some information on the new graphic novels. I was just wondering, are they all trash? or are there some worth reading? Graphic novels seem to be a genre that is growing in popularity and I wanted to know if somebody has discovered some treasures

Well, the only graphic novel I know of, per se, is "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". Yes, they made a movie out of it, but FIRST it was a graphic novel. I have NOT seen it, but want to, because I liked the premise of the story: super "heros" from great literature who get together to fight a great crime. Now, arguably, some of the "heros" were "iffy" to say the least...I mean, Mina Harkness, the girl who became a vampire (temporarily) courtesy of Dracula? Or Dorian Grey? Hmmmmm. Still, the storyline is cool. That being said, although I'd like to see it, I sincerely doubt if I'd let my kids look at this graphic novel for fear of it being just too, well...GRAPHIC. So, those are my ruminations---based on very little personal experience---about graphic novels. I'll be interested to hear more on this topic-and learn a little more, too!

I've never heard of Asterix. Who is Asterix? The little guy or the big one? They're both pictured on all the covers on Amazon. Never have seen these. Can you give a review? Are they good for history or more tongue-in-cheek?

So Natalia, not only did I not understand your original question, and therefore not help you out one iota, but now I turn interrogator expecting answers from you!

Asterix is the little fellow. He is part of a group of Vikings that have taken some kind of potion that makes them very strong. The Romans are always trying to get them and the results are funny. I think you and your kids will enjoy them.

I let my son try comic books for a little while, books from the library.

I just couldn't get past the buxom babes in the bikini tops. Why can't they just wear as much clothing as the men?

Is there a series w/o the bikini tops and revealing outfits?

We love Asterix, Calvin and Hobbes, TinTin, Charlie Brown.

But for true graphic novels, we have enjoyed versions of "A Christmas Carol", "The Odyssey" and "The Illiad." and some of Shakespeare. These are not comics but really books/plays in graphic form. Nicely done....Our local library has a number of these and for us they are fun additions to our other reading.

Most are in the Puffin Classics Graphic Novels series - you can do an Amazon search for titles.

Here is a list of graphic novels - some good, some sound not so good. As usual, we have to be choosy.

Thought these might be worth adding to this thread. I've not seen these books (yet) but they've made it as far as my amazon basket...

Paul: Tarsus to Redemption (Volume 1)
(also a vol 2 and vol 3)
and
Judith: Captive to Conqueror (Volume 1)
(also has a vol 2)

Classical Comics (especially the original text versions of Shakespeare's plays).

I was also impressed with Graphic Library's Battle of the Alamo though we have not tried any of the others in the series.

Bumping this up. We just got The Life of John Paul II...in comics!
from the library. Very well done- I wish were there more like this.

My ds has also read the Graphic History series books that our library has (all four of them ) and those are also well done. I think he liked Iwo Jima best.

We are always on the look out for another good graphic novel here.. ds loves them.

I just discovered those on Amazon too.. and was wondering about them.

I did get Saint Joan of Arc: Quest for Peace on a recommendation in my thread in Domestic Church about books on St. Joan of Arc and St. Lucy. Another by the same author is St. Bernadette and another that was recommended from Magnificant but I can't remember it off the top of my head.

My oldest is enjoying reading the one on Pope Benedict. He says he likes it, but it is hard for him to read since it is a right to left book.
