Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know why On Top of Concord Hill is out of print? No one has this book except the few people trying to extort between $58 and $230 for a used paperback!

I am so excited, because I have now gathered the entire collection of Laura, Martha, Charlotte, Caroline, and Rose for my girls...except that one!

Help!!!

Monica, I don't know the status of the book, but I just looked on Bookfinder.com and pulled up a few copies that weren't that pricey...$17.00 with postage for hardcover, about 9.00 for softcover.

Thank you for the reminder about Bookfinder.com. I haven't been there in forever.

Maybe it's the holiday rush, but the linked stores didn't have any of the less expensive books. I checked half.com this morning, and the book for around $13 was listed with others. When I clicked on it to buy, it told me on the next page that the book was not available. They are usually more on top of the stock. Weird. Anyway, I'll keep my eyes open.

Thanks again!

Monica, it is being reissued next summer in a different edition. If you want it in its current form, you might want to grab one of those $9 copies Jenn found!

Edited to say: Whoops, so much for the $9 copies! Sorry about that...

Thank you, Lissa. I had a feeling you'd have the inside scoop.

Hi Lissa,
Thanks for the "inside scoop." We have been checking the books out of the library and planning to buy the books over time. Is there a reason that I would want the "old edition" of your wonderful book? (They are read-alouds at our house that all 3 kids enjoy )

Thanks,

Jen,

Well...yes. I can't go into more detail until January, but the answer to your question is yes.

Well, I just got my Harper Summer 2007 catalog today, so I guess the news is public now. Yes, they are reissuing the Martha, Charlotte, Rose, and Caroline books with photo covers--and abridged text. :( I'll be posting about it on my blog very soon.

The Laura books will have photo covers but the text will not be altered. The Garth Williams art is being dropped from the new paperback editions.

And (deep breath) I have chosen not to continue writing my two series. I'll be announcing that on the blog soon, too, but I was going to wait until after the holidays. It was a hard decision, a year in the making, but I believe it was the right one.

There, I finally said it out loud!

Oh, Lissa, that makes me so sad. I can imagine that there are plenty of reasons that went into your decision, but I am sad. I know it will be hard to let go.

Lissa, a hard decision - and one that will make my youngest ds sad. But I understand that this must have been a difficult decision to make, with lots of reasons behind it. God Bless and Merry Christmas!

I was able to find a brand new copy from www.bookcloseouts.com, and it is on its way! On top of that, it was nearly half off. Their inventory can change rapidly; last week this wasn't there. It may not be there now, but I wanted to pass along the website.

Merry Christmas!

What a blow. Sometimes I want to say that the publishing industry just blows, iykwim!

I can't imagine Laura books without Garth's drawings and I can't imagine your series without your writing!

I hope you find better places to write that bring as much joy and satisfaction as those series have brought you. One thing: you are a *wonderful* writer.

Love,

Lissa - did I read correctly? All but the original are being re-released w/abridged text?

So, if I want my dd to have these books I need to buy them now before they all go the way of "On Top of Concord Hill?"

Yes, I'm afraid so. When the current Concord Hill print run ran out, they didn't reprint--they just waited for the reissue in the abridged form.

Now that the abridged versions are about to be released, I don't know if they will remainder the unabridged editions or just let the print run run out. The latter, I hope.

And if the abridged versions are choppy and awful, I don't want to know! I won't be reading them.

I just bought all the Martha and Charlotte books (from bookscloseouts, at a good deal, the only way I could really afford them) -- couldn't stand even thinking of them only being available ABRIDGED! Yuck!

Thank you Lissa, for all you put into these books. I can't wait to see what you do next. In the meantime, I'll be enjoying you, your writing, and your family here and on your blogs

Would it even help to write the publishers?

i know our local Librarians will be so mad! They hate this and we chat about the problem of dumbed down books a lot.

What so you think. If we wrote and got our Children's libraries to write?

just a thought- Maggie

I am embarrassed to say that I do not own any of these lovely books. I have been wanting to buy them but I am only recently able to purchase books again, now that Mike is back to work. I like to buy hardcover whenever possible. I went ahead tonight and ordered a few of them in hardcover from Amazon so we will have them for our family's library. I would hate to wait on this and not be able to get the originals.

Thanks for the heads-up that they are being abridged. That is never a good thing.

There are three that I am still searching for at a reasonable price. I will keep looking!
