I have two neices, one of which is my god-daughter, who are not being raised in the Faith at all. Their ages are 11 and 7. I don't see them often, but I am assuming that at least the 11yr old is very worldly, if not the 7 yr old yet. Their mother is living with another man after her third divorce last year.

I am looking for books that would open their hearts, either to the faith or the ideal of purity, or both, but they would have to be books that have some worldly appeal if they have any chance of getting read. Does that make sense?

Any thoughts?

Sixty Saints for Girls by Joan Windham (if you can get a hold of it--it is unfortunately out of print) would be perfect, even for a non-praciticing family.

The short, interesting stories appeal to children, and I'll bet it would get read by both girls eventually. Consider slipping it in alongside a more mainstream wholesome offering like Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, or Heidi.

I would look at Bethlehem Books. Sometimes overtly religious books may be rejected, but books that are fun and uplifting in a subtle way are accepted. I do know that my oldest dd and her friends all loved The Shadow of the Bear (then titled Show White and Rose Red) as teens. My dd also loved My Heart Lies South which is another good selection for a teen imo. OOps! your older niece is 11 yo. Well, keep them in mind.....

For slightly younger kids, I would look at books like The Red Keep (my girls all loved it and it focused on the need for purity of heart in the battle at the end) as a read aloud or Hilda Van Stockum's books. Too bad A Day on Skates is not yet back in print -- it's one of my favorites! Also the Letzenstein Chronicles have a fair amount of girl appeal in our family and also covered a period of history which is often slighted. It helped my kids understand the later existence of Communist states.

If something overtly religious would not be rejected, Sixly Saints for Girls is a great suggestion. My girls loved it, and so did I. Unfortunately, I gave my copy away -- silly me.

I also love Sword of Clonlarf which is now back in print through Hillside Books. It may be too boyish or too mature for your nieces (High King Brian Boru is killed towards the end), but I think my girls enjoyed it. What can I say? Books like that are fun while studying history
