Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We recently read the Bronze Bow and also the Door in the Wall. They were so good! I suppose they are commonly read? But having grown up on Scholastic book club, I'm now reading slightly ahead of my children to find great literature. I loved these two! I'd love some other suggestions for historical fiction like these!

Also, check out their new "Sword of Clontarf" -- now THAT's a good read! All about the last battle between Christians and Pagans in Ireland (and with the Vikings, too) -- definitely a great boy book!

There are so many great kids books, Julie. I'd start with the Newbery list (at least, those published before 1965). I have them listed here in audio format (if available) as well as print editions.

As a class, in fifth grade, we were each assigned a Newbery book to read and discuss. Most of us ended up reading about 20 of them, and The Bronze Bow was one of my favorites. Many of the award books are historical fiction, though some are fantasy, like the brilliant 21 Balloons.

After 1965, with a few exceptions, the books become a bit edgy.

MacBeth, I hope that one of the books that's awaiting your attention on your list is ... And Now Miguel. It's about shepherds in New Mexico. I don't remember the specific time-frame. I love that book!

Here are some that *I* think are worth attention besides what is already listed:

Drover's Road about 1920's New Zealand

The Hidden Treasure of Glaston 1171 England and Big John's Secret England, Holy Land, 1218

Winged Watchman about occupied Holland in WWII.

Old Sam, Dakota Trotter about the 1880s Dakota Territory.

For older girls, I can recommend:

Under a Changing Moon

For animal lovers:

The Ark

Rowan Farm

and these are lighter on the history, but it's a good series: Beanie Malone

Honest, I don't have an affiliation with Bethlehem books. I should though ... I'd make a killing! Whenever I'm looking for solid, steady, Catholic, but not stickily Catholic books, Bethlehem is the place I go first.

God bless,

btw I did *not* like The Westing Game. I don't know whether it was the macabre factors in it or the genre. I never made it past page 50.

Bumping up this ancient thread...

I have The Bronze Bow on my read aloud list for Lent.
I was unsure about it- I think the cover art and the back cover synopsis put me off a little. But it seems to get great reviews, and we loved The Door in the Wall.

So I can't go wrong, right?

The Bronze Bow is excellent. It's still one of my favorites. I had posted the original post...6+ years go and have since added 3-1/2 more kids I need to update.

Melinda, we read the Bronze Bow aloud here about two years ago (kids 8,10,10). They all really enjoyed it. One thing I liked about it was the way in which it made the struggles of the oppressed Jewish population against the Romans come to life. I think it gave the children a good background to better understand both the daily life and the relationship between the Jews and the Romans. It also illustrated well the huge divide between Jews and Gentiles that Christ bridged. I especially enjoyed the interaction of the characters with Jesus, and how they each reacted to the new Christian message. The struggles with anger, envy, doubt, and fear that Daniel (the main character) suffers are struggles that many people face; in the book, he finds his answers in Christ after a difficult journey. I think the author is very realistic in portraying the process of conversion in a way that children can understand--it's usually not an overnight thing! Most of us aren't St. Paul. We wrestle with our emotions, pride, and doubt quite a bit before finally coming to the point of actual conversion.

There are some violent scenes--attacks on innocents, rough/abusive men. However, while the characters and events portrayed are vivid, they are never graphic. I have one "sensitive" child, and even he loved the story.

You might appreciate the fact that the author does not grind any particular denominational "ax". I'm pretty sure from reading the book that the author is Protestant, but there is really nothing I recall that would be a problem for Catholics (oh, I sure hope I'm remembering correctly!!). Nothing comes to mind, at any rate.

In all, a great choice for Lent and a wonderful contribution to your children's general understanding of Biblical times.

Another vote for the Bronze Bow!

My oldest loved it and made her understand that life and time period so much better.

I remember really liking (a loooong time ago...dont' know what my mommy self would think of it now) "Turn Homeward Hannalee"--Civil War Fiction. Turn Homeward Hannalee I like to "older" cover compared to the new one. That's just me, though.

I also really liked Snow Treasure which was about the German occupation of Normay in WWII. Was it completely fictional or based on true events? I don't know...but that must be a sign of a good read! But I still remember these 20 years later!

My 8 year old just finished Bronze Bow and strongly wishes there were more books to make it a series - he wants to know everything that happens next ;)

Then I read it. I even cried at the end. It's that good.

Just a good read; well-written; full of hope - and very, very realistic about the struggle to accept Jesus over our own desires.

I found NOTHING anti-Catholic even in the slightest. Or anti-Jew for that matter (the few negative reviews say it's anti-Jewish).

So many books for this age group are just not written well - Bronze Bow is very well written!
