We just strted reading the first book and I wondered if anyone had already rowed this book? I'm pretty new at making my own unit studies-we just finished the beyond fiar series. I still feel like I could use some hand holding.
Thanks!

I'm going to watch this thread. I just purchased the first 4 books and want to start reading them to my girls for fun. One question, (I'm not sure it's addressed in the book) how do you pronounce Tacy?

It's definitely like Stacy without the S.
This is my absolute all time favorite girls' series...my pal Karen and I are planning to drag our daughters to Mankato, MN (fictionalized as Deep Valley in the books) some time next year.
The books about Betsy in high school are wonderful. All the anxieties of teen life are there...but there are only two kisses in all of the books (except where Betsy gets married, but that's ALL there is).
I love the historical details (clothes, houses, picnics) in the books. Plenty of room for rowing/unit studies. As Betsy gets older, there's more about her writing and about theater during the early 20th century...how cool to have a heroine who writes from the age of five!
Looking forward to more on this thread; now you've got me thinking!

A couple movies from the Time Period
Meet Me in St. Louis (1903) also the book which I remember enjoying as a girl and Photographs from the Fair.
The Music Man (1912) ever wonder at the dialog? What is a Firkin? Who was Dan Patch or the Great Creatore?
On Moonlight Bay (1916-1917) and By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1918)are loosely based on The Penrod Series featured in the books. (I haven't watched these two.)
A couple of sites
Chauncey Olcott history and song lyrics, the Irish Tenor who dazzled the Rays annually.
Maud Hart Lovelace bio with my favorite photo of Maud.
The Betsy-Tacy Society
Our own 4Real Mom Faith at Dumb Ox Academy was the very first thing that popped up on GoogleBlogs when I searched for Betsy Tacy. She is asking us to help Save Betsy-Tacy!
That's all I have time for! Dd has finished her Math page, so I'm off.

We finished the entire series this past year. We love Betsy, Tacy, Tib and all her friends. And although we loved both names anyway, we thought it was pretty great to give our newest dd the names of Betsy's two sisters!
We didn't row the series because we read the books as fun bedtime read alouds. But we happened to have listened to the first few Anne of Green Gables books, which take place around the same time, on cd in the van concurrently. Another literary connection, timewise, for younger kids would be the American Girl Samantha series.
Jennifer, I loved the Chauncey Olcott link. It was interesting to see his picture too. I spent waaaay too much time late one night searching online for the lyrics and music for the "Dreaming" song that plays such a prominent part during Betsy's high school years. All to no avail!
I spent time in Mankato, MN when I worked with NET Ministries as a young adult years ago. I had never heard to the Betsy-Tacy books back then, or I would have certainly taken a side trip to see the "Betsy" sites in town.
My girls loved the books so much that at least two of them are re-reading some of them on their own for fun this year.
