I'm looking to invest in some audiobooks for the fall. I want CDs. Where is the best source for price and selection for children's classics?

Elizabeth, you mentioned wanting to invest. Depending on your library lending system though, I might suggest investing in an mp3 player (non-iPod, as iPods aren't compatible with this method) and borrowing audiobooks instead. These are time-sensitive (valid for 21 days usually) library loans that are downloaded. You can usually burn them to cd also; but, the mp3 player would save the cds, or I would suggest using rewritable CDs.
We have come upon so many good books (many/most unabridged). Sometimes we have to put a hold on a book; so, there isn't always "instant gratification;" but, it has been less costly for us in the long run to use an mp3 player and borrow the audiobooks than to buy them as audiobooks in whatever format (mp3, cd). We also use that cassette tape-shaped adapter that can be used in a car for CD players to hook the mp3 player up to the car stereo system.
If this sounds of interest, you might look into what your library offers by way of audiobook loans in electronic formats.

I don't know about best, but my kids do enjoy books from Harper Audio. On CD, we have Narnia, some Roald Dahl, and are loving the Little House series now. I think we'll buy it for Christmas. Ours from Harper are read by a single reader who sometimes does voices.
The other night I bought the Three Musketeers through Itunes (it came from audible.com though). It's dramatized, and although some of the voices are not what I would cast, I'm enjoying it. I don't mind burning it to disc, but the books for my kids I do plan to buy on CD since they like to look at the pictures on the box. I remember doing that with records.

Well, you know I love Audible, and I list some of the great books we have bought on their listener plan over the years. I also buy many audio books via Amazon, if they are not available via audible. And our library has many audio books available in several formats (not for download yet...can't wait for that!!).
I have listed some of our favorite selections from Audible and Amazon. (Pages need updating again!  )
Oh, and Audible has a pretty good selection of Catholic Downloads.

Okay, so help me uderstand: You purchase an audible membership for $230 and then it still costs you $10 to download a book? How do the audio credits work? Is this really cheaper in the long run?...(Remember, numbers are my nemesis) How many books would you have to download in order to make this a good idea? Oh, and, does audible take Paypal?

Elizabeth, we had signed up for the $14.95 a month basic listener thing -- for 2 years. The $14.95 was billed monthly to our cc. Every month I got to download one book (and later, one periodical) -- regardless of price -- free. If I wanted to buy more than one book I had to pay for the second one. It was cheaper for me when we were in PA because almost none of those audiobooks were available through the library, and to buy them at full price -- yikes!
We recently cancelled because I'm trying to save money this year and will take advantage of the free downloadable audio from our libraries here. I wish I had seen Macbeth's Catholic list before cancelling though.

No, no no.  It does not cost $10 a book in addition to the credit plan. That's how much it ends up costing per book on the plan, even if the retail price of the book is $60.
You pay the fee either annually or monthly. You then get two free downloads (on my plan...other plans are different). The credits roll over if you have the monthly plan. I usually get two books per month, but sometimes I let the credits go, and they are still there for the next month (this is new...one used to lose the credits). If you want to get more books, the membership plan discounts ALL purchases.
This is where you have to be careful. I always buy the most expensive books using credits, and if I want a few $6 titles, I pay for them separately. There are many great titles for under $10--titles which would be more than $10 to buy.
Oh, and some audio is free, like press conferences, speeches, judicial nomination hearings, etc.
I do not know if they take Paypal. I just use a CC.
Oh, and Stef, if you want to rejoin  , I can send you an invite (this goes for anyone--PM me) and I think you get two extra books for free, or a free trial, or some such promotion.

Can I ask here, or shall I start a new thread on MP3 players? I have some CC points and could get an iPod...but I'd really like to know what's the best for audio books. I think I'd use it more for books, or a rosary....
So, MacBeth and everyone else - what do you recommend?

Sadly, Audible doesn't currently carry many of those Catholic titles any longer, specifically the ones from Ignatius/St. Joseph Communications. They haven't been available for about a year. We found out the hard way when we went to redeem credits. Yes, you can see them from the links; but, you cannot actually buy them (error message about it not being available any longer -- though you can listen to samples still).
At the time, we contacted St. Joseph Communications about it. We were told something along the lines of that they were thinking over their contract with Audible. I *assume* their contract expired, and they were trying to decide what they would do. I emailed over this past weekend to follow up on our email from last summer and asked that they consider making their audio products available for download (Audible or otherwise) and if they would also consider expanding their offerings over what they had available via Audible previously.

That's a shame.  And they still come up when I search for product listing. If you bought them already, though, they are still in you library. I wonder if Ignatius pulled them, or if they were not profitable for Audible, as well.
OTOH, St. Joe's CDs are very affordable.

I have used both a Pocket PC (1 gig) and an iPod (30 gig) with no problem. More memory means more books, music, whatever.

I use a Creative Zen Micro mp3 player that I've had a couple years. Our library does have its own downloadable audiobooks as well as some type of deal with Netlibrary, for more content available. Neither of them are compatible with IPods; that seems to be widespread - more availability to windows format players. My son has an IPod he bought used off Ebay and it is pretty easy to use, but he's limited to music from Itunes or his own CDs. I guess audible's content is available for either one. If you get a windows type player, look for one that says "Plays for Sure" b/c it's easier to ensure compatibility with various providers.
I also use my player to download and listen to EWTN podcasts - we don't get the TV channel so this way I can listen in the car or while sewing, walking, etc.

I just signed up for the Audible Listener program today (through MacBeth:-) for $9.95/year. I was interested in the unabridged The Tempest. It was $6.20 by itself or free with the Audible Listener program which also offered other free samples during the year. I figure that as long as I save another $3-4 dollars this year it will have been a good deal - I hope :-)
