DD4 has recently taken up an interest in pirates. She and her grandpa frequently exchange stories about Blackbeard and his adventures (completely made up).
I checked out the John B Sloop from our library. And found a few others (that, mostly, I was disappointed in).
Any recommendations?

A few that my boys (4 & 6) have enjoyed are:
How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long
Roger the Jolly Pirate by Brett Helquist
A Pirate's Life for Me by Julie Thompson & Brownie Macintosh
The Best Book of Pirates (Kingfisher)
Everything I Know About Pirates by Tom Lichtenheld
Captain Abdul's Pirate School by Colin McNaughton
Hope your daughter enjoys some of those.

Aaargh! We are putting together piratical costumes today for a release party at the coffee shop bookstore tomorrow of Pirateology. Aaargh!
Okay actually I'm really hoping we win the Egyptology book as we are planning on ancient times next year and they are giving away the entire -ology set. Haven't seen Pirateology yet, may be a bit old for your kids? Also, if you have access to the Pirates of the Caribbean 1 movie check out the special features - absolutely fabulous info there in a friendly format.
Now, how do I convince my husband to let us wrap his bum leg in woodgrain contact paper for a peg-leg?

So we be off to the Pirate Party!
Check out Marianna's costume! Those be my mermaid pearls and dh's biking boots. Add a tuxedo shirt and .50 cent red velvet pants and end with Mari Reade or mayhap Anna Bonney!

Great costume! I hope ye win, mateys!
As for pirate books, our library carries these books called The Library of Pirates.
We really liked those....very informative and good character studies.
Heads up: I believe it was in the Anne Bonny and Mary Read book that has a drawing of a woman revealing herself during battle as a woman to one of her victims. Nothing is seen if I remember correctly but implied.

The Gutenburg Project has a lovely book called "Pirates and the Great Sea Rovers" as a free download in the Children's Collection at their site. The illustrations are in full color and are beautiful!
Ahoy, mates,

What about Peter Pan? This one sparked an interest in pirates among my boys, who are around your dd's age. They loved the book and had lots of fun learning about pirates. Bethlehem Books has a few fictional books about pirates, but I suspect they might be a bit mature.

I was rereading the thread and realized that you asked for recommendations for younger children. Sorry to have missed that. These are definitely for older children.

That's the problem with studying pirates! These were outcasts from society with few redeeming qualities, I wrote a lovely, long post on why Mary Reade was exposing herself in battle (short synopsis is she hid out as a man for most of her life, and only to save her life when accused of being too close with Anne Bonney did she reveal to all that she was female) but realized the more I tried to explain the deeper into I got. (And don't even get me started on their trial!)
For younger kids you might try The Everything Kids' Pirates Puzzle And Activity Book: Set Sail into a Treasure-trove of Fun!
The Great Pirate Activity Book
A Pirate's Life for Me: A Day Aboard a Pirate Ship
If you are in Key West check out Pirate Soul and look out for Capt. Johnny O, absolutely amazing man. If a trip south isn't in your plans print the Educator's Guide.

Don't forget Pirate Poetry...this is especially fun with littler kids. Rosemary and Stephen Vincent Benet have several pirate poems in their book of Famous Americans. Off the top of my head, I know there's a poem on Captain Kidd. Too mature for your children's ages, but I just downloaded the first part of Canto I of Lord Byron's poem, "The Corsair" (based on the life of Jean Lafitte) for my kids to read.
We're actually leaving for Ocracoke Island tomorrow (Blackbeard's lair, and the area where they recently found his sunken boat, "Queen Anne's Revenge") and then on to Barataria, Jean Lafitte's old haunt. Hoist the mainsail, mateys!

Jennifer,
I just checked out the website for Pirate Soul---it looks like fun. We get to Key West pretty frequently-thanks for the tip! The fellow who started it is certainly an example of someone who has followed his interests and dreams, Delight Directed Learning and all that, isn't he? He would be a good example for that book, "Teenage Liberation Handbook"

Ooh! Thank you all SO MUCH! We have all the books requested through our library now - except Pirate Poetry - which sounds just up my little one's alley. Off to do an online request now...
came back and ETA: Duh! Not "Pirate Poetry" but A Book of Americans by Rosemeary and Stephen Vincent Benet!
