Hey y'all --
I started to read aloud, "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L. Konigsburg for my little ones (Thomas 6 and Maggie 5). We had watched the movie "The Hideaways", borrowed from the library, which is loosely based on this book, so they know what to expect but it's a great read-aloud!
We are now on a rabbittrail of Michelangelo thanks to this book -- where a mysterious statue may or may not be a true Michelangelo.
We're quite excited about investigating Michelangelo along with Claudia and Jamie (the characters in the book) to see if we can solve the mystery before they do!
I love living literature!

I LOVE this book! Ds read it last year for one of his literature selections. Possible rabbit trail diversions...take a virtual tour of the museum (they have a website) and pick out exhibits you'd like to see, or areas that Claudia and Jamie saw; United Nations; Bologna, Italy; how to set up a filing system (useful life skill!).
One thing I really love about this book is that as the main characters grow and change, the adults in the book aren't portrayed as mindless idiots but rather as loving, helpful and wise. In the end, Claudia's understanding of how she has changed is greatly enhanced by the comments of an understanding adult. So different from many of the films and cartoons of today, in which adults are portrayed as stupid and unable to function without being "rescued" by kids.

Thanks to you all for recommending this book as an add-on to a study of Michelangelo. It has hit the spot. My kids are loving it and eating up info on Michelangelo. Ironically enough, as I was reading it out loud to the little guys the other night, my 40+ brother (very intelligent but not a great reader) was in the room working on his laptop. I noticed him doing less and less "laptopping" and more and more listening. Everytime I'd stop, he'd say, "Well, what happened then????" or "Why would they do that?". I think he enjoyed it as much as the children. Maybe more!
Anyway, thanks for the recommendation!

I just loved this book growing up...I read it so many times. What fun the study of Michaelangelo. I had just received a mailing from the John Paul II Cultural Center on the events to honor Michaelangelo. How I wished I lived closer to DC!  One of the projects they were going to have was making pasta! How fun! (Of coure, we couldn't do it anyway, because my son is allergic to wheat!)
A movie to see is The Agony and the Ecstasy with Charlton Heston as Michaelangelo and Rex Harrison as Pope Julius II...the pope that commissioned the Sistine Chapel. It might be a little too old for your littles, but some of the views, art work, seeing how sculptures are formed, painting on his back...those are great images to see.

We loved this movie! I hadn't thought of showing it to the kids...my older two love Michelangelo.

We used Agony and the Ecstasy with my litles and I just fast-forwarded a couple of things, but that was mostly for time rather than blatant content. Thank goodness this movie was made back when Hollywood still had some discretion in what they showed vs what they implied --
The Michelangelo unit, using Mixed Up Files as a starter, really worked well. And was a great tie-in to religious art and various depictions of Jesus' Passion, death and resurrection just in time for Lent!
