Hi, my 9 year old son is ready to read some of the longer saint bios which I have seen both at the homeschool conferences and our church library. I have seen different series -- for example "Vision," "In the Footsteps of the Saints," and those by Windeatt -- and was wondering if one is better than another for his age, whether I should stick to one series to read for each bio, or whether there is a "best" version depending book by book.

First: I've found that Seton is a good place to buy Saint books as they usually have a series bundle at a fair discount from the individual book prices.

From simplest to most difficult

Along the Paths of the Saints
-picture books for fluent readers
- short enough to be read in a sitting, long enough to have some meat to them
-my only real problem with them is that there are so few of them

Encounter the Saint Series -short chapter books (100-120pgs with 10 to 20 chapters plus a handful of illustrations), 30 odd books in the series
-written by a variety of authors
-I particularly like the range of Saints in this series.

Windeatt -the length and level of her books vary widely. She has a fairly distinctive style so I'd recommend sampling before buying

Vision -middle school level
-variety of authors
-I tend to approve of the editor's choices

I agree with all of those suggestions.

In the Footsteps of the Saints are reprints of books printed by Dujarie Press. There are only a few books reprinted so far. These are probably some of the easier level books (Level II).

Along the Paths of the Gospel are translations from French editions. We love these. Seton only has 5 stories...I've got 5 others, but I know there are just a few more. They are enjoyable.

The Encounter the Saints series are by the Daughters of St. Paul / Pauline Books. If you can find the older version "Encounter Books" I find they are much better, illustrations and writing.

Your daughter is a wonderful age for the saint reading. A great book that can guide you with in and out of print books for saints is Reading the Saints.

I see this is 2nd edition. I'm wondering what is different...
