Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been re-reading Michael O'Brien's A Landscape With Dragons: The Battle for Your Child's Mind for the first time since we began homeschooling - almost six years! His ideas provide, I think, a neat framework for creating a rich atmosphere of literature for our children. I'm thankful to be reminded! And glad that, even though I often feel like I'm groping around in the dark, the culture of our home isn't too far off the mark. In general. On good days.

In terms of focusing on fairy tales which O'Brien recommends so highly, however, we haven't had a lot of success. The difficult and scary things that happen in the stories have slowed us down sometimes. But most recently it's the length of the stories. I'm reading Lang's Blue Fairy Book with my first grader, and the stories are just too long for one sitting. Can anyone recommend a more concise collection of fairy tales that is still beautiful and traditional?

We loved the Random House Book of Fairy Tales. Also, Charlotte Craft and K.Y. Craft have some beautifully illustrated fairy stories.
