Hello, my 2nd/3rd grader is ready for some more books but things are not flowing all of a sudden. He learned to read 3 years ago with the 100 Easy Lessons, did great. Then we started on the Seton Faith and Freedom readers which he did the 1st, 2nd and just finished the 3rd grader books. He did good, learned new words daily but over all it was a good experience for him.
At this point I have always started my children into literature books. Mr. Poppers Penguins, Charlottes Web, or something like this.
Week one was the longest week of our reading history. We tried Mr. Poppers penguins he was so discouraged and felt so terrible about his reading we stopped and I just rushed to the library and picked up some, dare I say, Step 3 books  just to build his reading back up. The best I can say about that was I got one called George the Drummer Boy (about the battle of Lexington/Concord).
So now I am in need of help. Obviously this was to big of a step for him. I could really use some suggestions on what to have him start reading for 'chapter' books which is what he wants to start reading aloud to me.
Thoughts, suggestions or comments greatly appreciated.

The CHC book series: Bigger Stories For Little Folks,
Devotional Stories for LIttle Folks 1 and 2.
These are a pleasure to read- lots of laughs along the way, especially the Greg stories. PLus it is nice to read about another homeschooling family

Huge plug here for the Mercy Watson books. We LOVE them, finally a bridge between readers and chapter books that don't make me want to poke out my eyeballs with a toothpick  Recently wrote a review

Melinda - we are reading the Dev. books by CHC together, well actually I read them to him. They are the cutest books. Now if they'd only do the same thing for the teen years!
Good suggestions I know I have a few Frog and Toad around here and will check around for the other ones mentioned. Thanks ladies

What about heftier picture books like Billy and Blaze?
I also think that TinTin was a big bridge and motivator for my oldest.

I agree! I even wrote to Nancy Nicholson (at my dc's request) and asked if she had any plans to write more. She was very nice and replied something about having to get Greg through college first

In addition to many of the books that have already been recommended, my boys have enjoyed the Arthur books by Lillian Hoban, and Claire Huchet Bishop's Pancakes Paris and The Truffle Pig. My girls have liked the Jenny Linsky books by Esther Averill. My boys liked Averill's The Fire Cat. Syd Hoff has a number of books that appealed to my older boys too.
