and what are you planning to read during Advent?
I am still getting over listening to "Call It Courage" on cd, 
That story had us on the edges of our seats! And it was a good thing it was on cd, because who could pronounce all those names?
Prior to that we loved "The Witch of Blackbird Pond."
At the moment we are really enjoying "Detectives in Togas" as our bedtime read aloud. I have to say it is very cleverly done.
"Mr. Bowditch" on cd is waiting for us at the library right now- I had to use ILL to get it, and I am really excited about that one. We had to wait a long time to get it.
For Advent I think we are going to revisit "The Trees Kneel at Christmas".
Lindsay also just posted about "Christmas" by Alice Dalgliesh. Now I want to add that to our list!

I'm reading The Ruins of Golan (Ranger's Apprentice) for older kids.
One of my older daughters is reading American Girl books (the historical ones) with her little sister and the little boys only sit still for the occational board books.
For Advent I got "Without Parables" for the older kids and "Catholic Tales for Boys and Girls" for the older younger kids and then we may do the "Advent StoryBook" we did last year for the little guys.. and we usually finish off with one of our Christmas picture books. It sounds like a lot but the kids really liked it last year and while I'm adding in the middle level, I think it'll go over really well. Last year we did "Donkey Bells" and the "Advent StoryBook" and finished with a picture book and the kids were often wanting a second picture book.

During school "basket" time we've been reading, simultaneously (well, on alternating days) Augustine Came to Kent and The Shining Company. Same time frame (within three years of each other, historically), Saxons in the east of England, Celts in the west.
At bedtime, the whole Borrowers series by Mary Norton.
Ears open for good Advent reading for middle school!

Oh my word! I was just about to suggest Pete and the Manger Men (this links to a flickr page where you can see the illustrations and read the only description I've seen). An elderly neighbor's daughter gave it to us last Christmas. She thrifts a lot and often keeps us in mind.
But when I was going to link it on Amazon, I saw that the used price there is $95!
If, however, you could find it at the library or through interlibrary loan, etc..., I think it would be a good fit for you. It is a sort of hybrid picture/chapter book and a good read aloud.

We are also going to read "The Trees Kneel at Christmas" by Maud Hart Lovelace. My daughters love the Betsy Tacy series, so I hope it is keeping with her style, which all my children enjoy. We also have "Lion in the Box" by Marguerite de Angeli, "Stories of the child Jesus from Many Lands by Lutz, and "Christmas Fairy Tales" selected by Neil Philip.
This list will probably be modified. My youngest is 8 and will probably want to re-read those de Paola books we have too! We're moving away from picture books, of course, but we still enjoy the classics from time to time.

We are reading aloud, The Mitchells Five for Victory and Redwall. Surprisingly my boys are liking the Mitchells more.
For Advent we will be starting Kersti and Saint Nicholas and finishing up The Mitchells. Plus a ton of picture books, but this covers the chapter books.

I am frantically writing these titles down. That is what I love about this place- there's always a new, great book I have not heard of that someone can recommend.
We started Mr. Bowditch yesterday-- golly, I hope things look up for Nat soon  .

Hi Claire, we've had our set for years...it looks like this one at amazon but with a different cover. It is a 7 book set that combines the original 21 full size books into a smaller format. Be warned, the print is rather small, but it hasn't stopped my sons from pouring over them. One of our very best investments!

I don't know how I have missed this thread but I will share what we are reading.
My oldest and I are reading The Oedipus Trilogy.
I am reading The Railway Children to the two youngers.
Our family read aloud is Dickens' Cricket on the Hearth.
For Advent, we are reading The Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp and Bartholomew's Passage. We are so enjoying these two reads.

These are what we've been getting as well. The hardcovers with 3 stories per volume. The kids love them and I don't have any problem with the print though it is a bit small.

Cynthia, you will like "The Trees Kneel at Christmas." I'm a huge B-T fan and really enjoyed this story.
I am SO sad that we are past the read-aloud stage! (I do plan to get out our favorite picture books, just for fun...happy memories!)

We are reading The Christmas Mystery by Jostlin Gaarder, as we do every Advent. Well, we used to listen to it on CDs from the library but they are no longer available  And I should have listened to dh a few years ago when he told me to buy our family the CDs. If anyone sees these for sale anywhere, please let me know!
But, it has been a blessing as we have never actually READ the book. I personally, since i am doing the reading! am getting so much more out of it than normal.
This thread is a reminder to unpack the picture books. I think I can get one more year of enjoying them!

My sneaky read-aloud tactic: I get the 10 year old to sit next to me on the couch and read aloud to her within earshot of the other kids, who either think they're too old for storytelling or my young whippersnapper son who says it's boring, but listens to every word. We are reading The Jesse Tree by Geraldine McCaughrean (which I find challenging, something about the syntax and unexpected humor, but it's really good and has some rich language my daughter enjoys) and a couple of winter or Advent/Christmas/winter saints themed picture books every night. My girls are in public school, only my son is homeschooled, so we just have read aloud in the evening. I'm glad we've gotten back in the habit. But those evening activities always seem to try and get in the way...!

Christmas Remembered
We are reading this one from Tomie de Paola. So far, we are really enjoying it- very interesting about Christmas before and after WW2, first Christmas with a TV, the Christmas he worked in a candy store. We're about 1/2 way through it.
