Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had never heard of him!!!

What a treasure! He was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War! He then converted to Catholicism and became a priest... and he was a poet! Even better... his poetry is beautiful! He has a lot of stuff free all over online ... I'm drooling over his "Child Verse: Grave and Gay" and he also has verses for the whole Rosary!

We are just kicking into our Civil War studies and I was trying to choose a poet for this term... when along came Fr. Tabb, priest, poet, ex-Confederate soldier. Incredible. I splurged on buying one of the last affordable used copies of The Amazing John Tabb (Sorry! Check add all?) and am so eager to get it.

Anyway, check him out... I'm over the moon here...

What a great discovery, Ellie! I love history connections like that. Sounds like he would be a great project for our Catholic history fair next year - I'm always on the look out for Catholic history that isn't well known.

I'm going to link this to the Civil War sesquicentennial thread as a topic and resource.

Fr. Abram Ryan was another Civil War poet. His poetry is also beautiful and very accessible even to the youngest child. "The Sword of Robert E. Lee" and "Rosary of my Tears" are stunningly beautiful. Ryan is pro-South, so most of his poetry will reflect the Confederacy.

Check him out also.

Here's a good synopsis of Fr. Tabb.

I included some info on Father Ryan on the Civil War thread here. I'm excited to read more about Father Tabb, now.
