I have never read this series.  My dd, who is 17 now, read the first book years ago. For some reason, my voracious reader 12 yrold boy picked it up and read it fast and liked it and wants to continue the series.
Is this an okay series for a middle school boy?? I have no clue

Sure! It's a bit flowery (Anne has a vivid imagination) but also lots of fun (for the same reason, because Anne's imagination leads her into some interesting adventures).
He may get discouraged later in the series, when things get more romantic (in a very family-friendly way...no worries there, as I recall), but he might also enjoy Anne's adventures as a young schoolteacher.
I think it's great that he wants to read the series!
(Disclaimer: I'm such an Anne Fan that I made my husband go to Green Gables and the other Anne-related sites on Prince Edward Island on our 25th anniversary trip.  )

Even if the more "romantic" of the books aren't to his taste.. he might want to try the next one etc.. He may really enjoy Rainbow Valley for instance which is about Anne's children including the boys..

And if he likes the Anne books, he might like Little Men and Jo's Boys by Louisa May Alcott!

My ds is an Anne fan at 9. Anne of Windy Poplars has some very funny, sad and interesting story lines.
In particular, one old lady lives in a big, formerly grand house. She loves telling people how all the inhabitants died or came to bad ends. This is both humorous and shocking - my ds enjoyed it tremendously. There is plenty of boy stuff mixed into the series.

I think that Anne's House of Dreams is probably the least friendly to little boys.
Though I love it! I never understood why they felt the need to completely make up new Anne stories for the third sequel to the films when they could have picked up where they left off with this one. So moving and such a host of colorful characters! Just a little more "grown up" and serious in its themes. I guess it wasn't feminist enough

My husband read the series as a child and my son has read the first book when he was 12 or 13. They both really liked it.
