From other links I came across this page about Charlotte Yonge and her writings. She was a devout Catholic according to this.
Little Duke is one title used for Ambleside Online.
This review also says Daisy Chain and Dove in the Eagle's Nest are better than Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and Little Men.
I've never read her...although Little Duke is on my list to preview.
I'd love to hear other people's experience with this author.

I continue to be intrigued and yet have not gotten any of her books. I really have to start adding her to our library.
I first read about her in this article in First Things (really good article BTW). There is a small paragraph about her and her writing. Then Willa shared a list of some of her books in this post. Her name keeps popping up  .
I can't wait to hear responses, thanks for asking Jenn

I wondered if she was Catholic and just never got around to looking it up!
We LOVED Little Duke! It's really good. Slow at the beginning, but stick with it....and you'll be glad you did. It's DEF. a book to read slowly and savor! It's a Year 2 book on Ambleside, so don't hesitate to read it with your 1st-3rd graders, even though it's MEATY and quite an advanced book! Jenn....your boys would LOVE it. There are a couple gruesome and very sad parts in it, so mommies of sensitive-ones...beware, preview, or read ahead.
Off to see if our library has any of the others you listed.
There is another of her books on the Ambleside list for more advanced elementary, that I was looking forward to previewing....can't remember exactly the title....but I remember thinking...."Oh GOOD! Another Charlotte Younge book!"

That First Things article is quite interesting. He does come down hard on some books, like Little Women.
I like how he recommends My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. I agree -- I really, really enjoyed that book. I'm going to bump an old thread about that one....

I agree there are a few on his list that I really enjoy. Milne, for one; we can't get through age six and not have read his Pooh books and poetry.  But it has given me some new authors and titles to look out for too

How much we enjoy Charlotte Yonge here! We have read The Little Duke several times!
Her writing is wonderful, though many of her books are as Suzanne described: they require a little effort to get into, but they are SO WORTH IT! Daisy Chain and Heir to Redclyffe are not to be missed!
A Book of Golden Deeds makes a wonderful family read aloud, and is especially well suited for inspiring courage and virtue through story!
I don't think she was Catholic, but High Anglican. She was very much a part of something called the Oxford Movement which sought to affirm Catholicism, especially the rich liturgical traditions and Sacraments of Catholicism, which is why her writing is replete with references which sound unmistakably Catholic. In her biography (I mention it below), her very dear friend writes that she was quite deeply devoted to and animated by the Church year, and she would not write during Lent.
Get your ereaders ready: here are her works at Project Gutenberg. Happy reading!
And for a good biography of Charlotte Yonge, read her very dearest friend's tribute and biography, which she wrote shortly after Charlotte died, Charlotte Mary Yonge: her Life and Letters by Christabel Coleridge. This book has been in my reading basket for some time, with me picking it up and putting it down for another, and this has inspired me to read it!

We have a very old copy of The Book of Golden Deeds. I think it must have been a "gift" type book, as it is smaller than a normal book (more like 4"x6") and has a very decorated cover. I love the stories in it; actually, your post here reminded me to read it to this set of boys over the summer. The print in our book is quite small, so I haven't assigned it as part of their independent reading. The presentation of heroic virtues, though, is one that could thrill the heart of any boy and encourage him in holiness.
Jenn, I didn't see in the article you referenced (but I did quickly scan it, so maybe I missed the reference) the book Gold Dust, which is a collection of inspiring sayings and has some beautiful quotes in it.
I actually posted some quotes from this book a few years back:

On Love and Suffering
Those few quotes should give you an excellent sense of the solid spiritual life Charlotte Yonge enjoyed.
And Jen, I've had Heir to Redclyffe on my Kindle for about 18 months now, and have only read the first page!!!  So, I feel your pain!

I wonder if you have an excerpted copy of Golden Deeds. Somewhere along the way, they took parts of it and reissued the book as smaller. The entire book is over 400 pages long (almost 500!!).
Here is a wonderful chronological table of all the stories from The Golden Book of Deeds.

Yonge was a High Anglican who believed that she and other High Anglicans received the body, blood of Christ at Holy Communion or at least her books indicate that she believed so. Years back Laura Berquist and I had a discussion about this after we both read "Under the Storm" by Yonge. You really have to know your time period, because you would think she was writing about the persecusion of Catholics under Queen Elizabeth. But she is actually writing about Cromwell searching out High Anglican priests. Either way it is an exciting story. "Lances of Lynwood" and "Grisly Grisell" are both reprinted by Lepanto Press (Catholic publishers) and are easily purchased. Yonge also wrote interesting histories of England, Germany, France, Rome. We have 2 of them, but again you have to know your history well to get a ton out of them. But they aren't expensive used books.

Huh! I'll have to check that out when I'm at my Virginia home next. That is most likely the case, since the copy I have is probably only about 230 pages or so, but as I noted above, the print is pretty small. I'll be interested to compare the stories in it with the ones in the original book!

Oh no!!!
I don't suppose you have an ereader of some kind do you, Melinda? There are so many available for free. I was just sitting here, thanking Jenn for renewing my interest in Charlotte Yonge, and downloading free books to my hearts content into ibooks!!! She was a prolific writer!
Do you know what I'd love to find? A chronological compilation of the setting (location and century) of all of her books!! Anyone found anything like that???

YES!!!! And how kind and thoughtful of your dh to purchase an ipad for himself so you can load free ebooks on it!!!
Seriously....go to ibooks and click on the little "store" button. Now, in the little search field type "Charlotte Yonge". All of her results will come up. You'll have to swipe one or two pages to get to the free versions, but there are MANY of them on ibooks.

Thanks, Jodie. That does look like a really neat site! I am going to look around there a little more. What I was looking for though, was a list of the books and the period the story is set in, not necessarily when she wrote the book originally. For example,
The Little Duke is set in Normandy in the 10th century.
Lancers of Lynwood - 12th century, Crusades
Unknown to History: A Story of the Captivity of Mary of Scotland - 16th century
Dove in the Eagle's Nest - Medieval times, Germany, excellent descriptions of castles
Daisy Chain - late 19th century, England, family life
Maybe we can flesh out this list a bit more. Stephanie, can you help with any more titles and the period and setting of the story?
Thought it might be interesting to note that Charlotte Mason quotes from Yonge's book, Heir of Redclyffe in Volume I:
