Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So...my 6yo dd just ploughed through Charlotte's Web and Stewart Little. I remember loving these as a child!

However, we also got the audio versions of these and listened to them in the car...and then...I wasn't so thrilled.

I never realized that EB White sneaks in some "coming of age" themes (ie: Fern and Henry)... (or Stewart and Harriet--the whole thing about him asking her to meet him without telling her parents...and him perspiring through 5 shirts was more than too much for me.

I have to keep in mind that though my dd can read and understand much...it's not always appropriate.

With that being said, do you have any recommendations for books at the same reading level as Charlotte's Web that are completely innocent in nature?

I know...I am splitting hairs to a certain degree...but I really didn't want "romance" introduced until a bit later. However, it seems so hard to avoid it!

Help, please?

My kids loved My Father's Dragon. Dolphin Adventure was a big hit too, but very short. We actually read it all in one day because they wouldn't let me put it down!!! We just started reading some of the Thornton Burgess books and my kids have loved those! We have done the Boxcar children books. There is some great nature study, especially in 2, 3 and 6. Books 4 and 5 were really difficult for me to get through, but like I said, the kids love them. My kids really loved Because of Winn Dixie. I didn't love it because it used southern language. I corrected the language as we went since I already have to deal with that and don't want to reinforce it. It is a nice story though. I am planning on doing the Little House books soon too.
