My niece (starting 4th grade) is addicted to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. I have not read the books, but it sounds as though their main appeal is humor.
I'd like to start her on another series - well written, humorous, not twaddly. Her birthday is coming up very soon.
All suggestions appreciated!

I'm not good at "humorous" but captivating and interesting and well-rounded, I'll put a plug for Elizabeth Enright.
We're listening to "Gone Away" by Elizabeth Enright on cd right now. All her books are just wonderful! There are the two for the "Gone Away", then "Thimble Summer" is a stand-alone, and then 4 books of the Melendy series.

I'm not sure. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a big hit around here, too.
(And I have to admit, the movies are hilarious for kids and adults alike).

Is it a comic book?

My 4th gr son's all time favorite funny books are the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series. We did them last year as read alouds and he still laughs when he thinks about them. They also would appeal to girls just as well.
Another series that we are enjoying is The Peterkin Papers. Beverly Cleary's books are all very funny. He especially enjoyed Henry Huggins and Emily's Runaway Imagination.

No, but it does have comic-type illustrations on the front of the book and a few inside. It's a typical tween book about the perils of middle school, trying to become popular, etc.

I was going to suggest Beverly Cleary but I see Adele beat me to it!
Another author we like at that age is Dick King-Smith. Lots of cute, funny, well written books. Probably best known as the author of Babe (the gallant pig) upon which the movie is based.

Mine enjoyed Mrs. Piggle Wiggle too. Nurse Matilda is similar to Mrs. Piggle Wiggle (naughty children are straightened out). (Nanny McPhee is based on this book.) My kids liked it.
Theresa, I'm glad you mentioned Dick King-Smith. I stumbled across his books and checked some out but returned them without cracking one open. We'll have to try again.

Hank the Cow Dog is HILARIOUS! We love listening to the book cd’s of these, the ones we have had are read by the author...he is terrific. I also throw another vote in for Beverly Cleary....she is a hit around here.
