Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So I am currently building my library for our first year of school at home. We will be easing into school around Christmastime (starting with an Advent unit and books about Christmas and Advent and just general Christmas books) and then stepping more into full swing after the holidays wind down.

For dd when she turns 4 (mid-December), right now we are planning on mainly:
1) FIAR for the core subjects
2) various religion materials, some stuff from CHC and some stuff recommended by STAA
3) I have RightStart A for her. she was academically ready this year for it but didn't want to be "taught" yet

I would like to add in some good themed Catholic read alouds (for saints and important feast days) and/or some other favorites for the various months. DH said I can build our home school library/curriculum and our general library for Little Miss.

A good start would be some of the books in Catholic Mosaic: Living the Liturgical Year With Children by Cay Gibson.

Not all books are readily available, nor not all appropriate for the younger ages. Over time I've added titles from the booklist to our library, some I haven't. Some we have liked, some we haven't, but it's a great starting point.

We have added a few more titles that we find works for us, like stories from collections of saints (such as by Ethel Pochocki, Joan Windham) to read for their feast days. We also look to many of Tomie dePaola religious books, Leo Politi, Pauline Baynes, Gennedy Spirin, books from the Daughters of St. Paul, some older out-of-print books "for Young Catholics".

This month, January 21, is the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, the patroness of our board, and the book A Gift of Gracias: The Legend of Altagracia is wonderful.

I don't have time to link them, but search for Catholic Mosaic, Our Lady of Altagracia, etc. in the forum for some previous discussions.

Thank you. I appreciate the response. I adore Tomie dePaola books. I have some of his stuff right now from the library.

You can take a peek at Hillside Education, the publisher, of the booklist and what the book is all about.

At the top of the Domestic Church threads we have a "sticky" thread that is placed there for ease of searching. Anyway it is Liturgical Year Planning Threads . When you open that thread you will find there is a link for each month (and also for the liturgical seasons). Over the years members have compiled resources and ideas for learning about and celebrating particular feasts and seasons in each of those links. There are books and read-aloud recommendations there as well. It would probably be a helpful place to look.

Another suggestion.. when I only had little ones, I started buying ahead a bit. slightly older books.. I bought a rosetta stone spanish program when I found a super deal and could shift funds to it because I wasn't needing to buy a lot of curriculum yet.

Yeah our big purchase this year will be some religion supplies (like Who Am I? and stuff like that) and FIAR.

My library has an amazing supply of Tomie dePaola books but I am going to try to find them second hand at various places too because I love them (the art work and stories, they bring back childhood memories). Our other big purchase if we can swing it is going to be a language program.
