Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane mysteries come to mind as well as the Father Dowling mysteries by Ralph McInerny. However, they aren't fresh enough in my mind for me to say for sure what ages they would suit.

The are the books byC K Sansom - very interesting and lots of Christian details, but not "a Christian novel", and only for adults if you know what I mean.

Or Ellis Peter's Cadfael novels? Fine for 12 up I would guess, at least in our home. Not orthodox Christian view points (ie he does not repent of fornication in his youth because "love shared is never a sin" and that kind of thing) but very interesting to Christians as they are set in an Abbey.

ETA - The Name of the Rose is also a fab book set in a monastery in the middle ages, very absorbing and fascinating but I wouldn't let my children read this until they were in the later teens I guess.

The Corner that Held them by Sylvia Townsend Warner is set in a convent over the period of a couple of hundred years in medieval times. It is pretty mature content - illegimate children, a priest who is not a priest at all etc, but I really like it for the glimpse of life in a convent.

Lord Peter Wimsey novels deal with adult situations (adultery, suicides - there were a LOT of suicides throughout the series). I would not classify these novels as having a significant amount of Christian content (although one is set in a church). Lord Peter himself at various times questions / doubts his faith.

I was reading through the Cadfael novels until I came to one where two young protagonists do "it" behind a side altar in the Abbey church. I closed that book and will never read Ellis Peters again. (Sorry, can't remember the title of that one).

There is a series of books called Acts of Faith by Janette Oke and Davis Bunn. I read the first book, The Centurion's Wife. It is set at the time of Christ and done very well. The "centurion" in the stories is the one whose servant Jesus cured in the Gospel. They're not exactly mysteries per se, but suspenseful and full of first-century Jerusalem ambiance.
