Nancy Drew is supposedly being played by the niece of Julia Roberts...Emma Roberts. Just a bit of trivia which clogs my brain and doesn't allow real important information to stay in my brain.
I loved Nancy Drew when I was younger. I always wanted her car and housekeeper.

Sarah isn't crazy about Nancy Drew, and she didn't like Bridge to Terabithia. 
She does, however, like Emma Roberts, who she said was in something or other that she saw, and thank you, she was thrilled to learn she was Julia Robert's niece.
Not so useless after all!

We just listened to Bridge to Terabitha and I have to say the kids didn't like it. I don't know if they will be interested in the movie.
Nancy Drew on the other hand, they'll like that.

At Literature Alive! a member shared this interview link at Christianity Today with author Katherine Paterson: An Unsafe Bridge.
It's excellent. She discusses (in small part) her Christianity and the Christianity aspect woven into the book by way of C.S.Lewis' Narnia and so much more. It's an excellent interview.

Thanks Cay for sharing this link. I personally never liked the story, but perhaps it is because of what Paterson says . . . it's private and personal. I could never use it in a class because I would always cry! I really like Paterson though; some of her books are among my favorites. So I'm glad to see where she is coming from.
My son is going with a group of friends to see it on Friday and I had to warn him that it will be sad. These kids who have never read the book see the trailer and think it is some fantasy story. So I wonder if his pals will even like it when they find out it's a serious story and will make them cry. Ah life!

I just wanted to jump in here and say...this book is great!  I read this book when I was probably 5th or 6th grade and it's powerful story stuck with me. I bought it for my daughter last year and wasn't sure if she was "ready" for it, so I put it away. (She's 11 now.)
Then, after seeing the movie trailer, I was so excited! I read it in 2 sittings and cried...again! I love that book! Now, obviously, it's not for everyone. My daughter can't seem to get past page 12! She's saying to me, "Can't I just read Swallows and Amazons?" And I'm saying, "No! Read this!" What a weird mom, huh? Well, I just know that the movie can't possibly be as good as the book and it's going to ruin what shoulda, woulda, coulda been such a great book reading experience...what do they call this when you force your interests on your poor, innocent children?! well, whatever it is, I'm shamefully guilty of it right now!
I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks of the movie!

I can relate to this - I have a plethora of information stored in my brain that is absolutely useless to my current state in life.
We have this book, but have not read it. Other than sadness, is there anything too "mature" in this book for an almost ten year old? My son saw the preview of the movie and wants to see it after he reads the book.

ok, well, being a newbie and all, I have no idea how you guys do that copy and paste thing from other messages, but I wanted to respond to the "too mature issue".
Jess takes about 3 pages to describe just how in love he is with the music teacher, there are some bad words, and his family is totally dysfuctional...that being said, it is all contextual. It has a reason to be there. It's not love, bad words and dysfunction for the sake of them. So, let's face it, the world has these things in them and if our children are exposed to them in an excellent book - and we are there to talk to them about it - then I think it becomes a matter of growth and it is worth it.
Just my 2 cents...

My 10 dd read the novel with her class last Fall...she attends school. I took her to see the movie yesterday and we enjoyed it  ...touching story.

Wow, I read the screen-it review and decided I wouldn't let my kids see it because of what seemed to be alot of put-downs and imitative behavior. I am not familiar with the story. Is it not as bad as it looks on paper? Or is it worth overlooking the negative?

Just adding to this thread -we watched the movie last night, it opened in cinemas here on Thursday. We loved the movie!In Australia, it is rated PG ( Parent Guidance recommended)
Paterson says she wrote the book to help her son, David, deal with the death of his best friend Lisa when they were 8. She also says, as a Christian, that her viewpoint, her belief in grace and hope, permeates all her novels - you definitely see that in the film.
I can see we will be following a Terabithian rabbit trail and put some links up on our blog...
