I saw the first book a couple of years ago at B&N and was immediately prejudiced. Talk about judging a book by its cover! It was beside some other occultish-looking books so I didn't even want to look at it.

My 11-yo saw it recommended on Boys' Life a couple of months ago and HOUNDED me until I finally agreed to pre-read it. I was immediately hooked!

I am NOT a science fiction fan. I don't even like Perelandra, etc even though I'm a big CS Lewis fan. But THIS was really, really well-written. We *all* love it.

Only quibble I have is the mention of "pollution and overpopulation" in the first part of Book 2 and Book 3 (a brief recap of what happened in previous books). Besides that, the books are really pro-children so I didn't see any other indication that the author believes strongly in the overpopulation myth. There is also mention of God in Book 3 and something about being "fearfully and wonderfully made", and that comes from the Bible so the author at least has some familiarity with Christianity. His Elyon(?) series is also sold at Christianbook.com so maybe those are okay too.

Unless there are any other messages that I'm missing (we've read the books but I'm still thinking of putting together some sort of after-the-reading unit study), the books should be a fine read for children around 9 and up.
