So this year I'm trying something a bit different with my kids: I've let them choose the theme for mom/kid reading and make a year-long unit study with each of them.
JP (almost 7) wants to do Norse and Greek Myths -- easy as we own the D'Aulaire books which are beautiful and fun to read ... we'll augment as needed. I'm thinking we'll start with the Norse myths (seem like a great lead-in to Christmas to me? ) and then spend the 2nd half of the year on the Greek Myths ... fairly a "no brainer" as I've done these with the older ones. This is also a great lead-in to the software game he and his older brother love to play: Age of Mythology (which is a hand-me-down from their 20yobrother who talked me into buying it originally back when he was a 6th grader! ). It acutally is a great reinforcer for study of myths!
Thomas is doing Seton this year and with co-op classes and a big part in a big play ... he really doesn't need much additional from me.
Maggie, on the other hand, has decided she'd like to study different diaries of people ... she has just started a diary of her own and things it's way cool to read what other people thought and did. She has, at this point, no specifics as far as type of diarist (artist, writer, naturalist) or period (Victorian, child, pioneer). She just wants to study diaries.
Any suggestions? I know this is vague. I think I'll try and steer her to a more specific, but for now ... what have y'all done with your kids that made this fun and interesting and a wonderful learning experience? Are the AG diaries a good idea? Or has anyone done naturalists -- Beatrix Potter's journal is one we own, are there others?
HELP!

A few that I can think of off the top of my head...
:: Beatrix Potter - Victorian naturalist
:: Edith Holden - Victorian naturalist, botany
:: Journal of John James Audubon - American naturalist
:: Royal Diaries series (this is more historical fiction than actual diaries, but my dd likes them)
:: Christopher Columbus' journal - not very girly, but it is a diary/journal
:: Livingstone's African Journal
:: Diaries and letters of John and Abigail Adams
I know there are more...if I think of them I'll come back. We've enjoyed many of these.

Oh, Jennifer, you are good!
It's the royal diaries I was thinking of and couldn't think of (if you know what I mean! )
Like I said, I'll try and pin her down ... but she's one of those skittish kids who if you try to make her focus on something, gets all shy and won't say anything except what she thinks you want!
Thanks, Jennifer!

Here are the Scholastic book listings in chronological order:
Dear Americawhich are girls' diary pages
My America which are young pioneers' journals
My Name is America which are stories with boys as the heroes/narrators
Royal Diaries (not in chronological order but with dates) which are stories about ladies in history as young girls.
Here's the overall link that includes activities, arts and crafts, etc.

The journals of Lewis and Clark are wonderful. Great nature-study tie-in as well.
