I just needed to share an incredible site--Haiku of a Homeschooler. Each post is unique, entertaining, and clever. The author, Amy (a member of this board--I hope she will not mind this unexpected bit of publicity!), managed to strike a chord with me in every entry. I did not even know I liked Haiku, but this is enough to make me a fan.
Discussing my newfound appreciation for this form of poetry with my children yesterday, my eight year old daughter spontaneously composed her first Haiku:
Saw a butterfly
Being chased by a large bird.
I named it "Goner."
I have a feeling we are going to have a lot of fun with this!

I love it!!
OK, I'm getting a big head here...
I'm glad you like it. I got a book called "Honku" out of the library one day that had kind of modern, quirky haiku in it, all about traffic and cars - it was started in NY close to where I grew up so it really resonated with me--and I was hooked! So I started my site. It is my one bit of creativity in the world because I'm a failure at all things crafty, lol! Mostly, it's just fun, almost like putting a puzzle together.
Thanks for the kudos. It really makes my day to know people enjoy it!
ETA: I just found your blog yesterday too Alice, and I love it! So warm and friendly, inspiring and informative at the same time.

I mentioned it on my blog several days ago, too -- I love it, Amy! Also posted about your blog, A Call to Adventure. That one's terrific as well, and I absolutely loved the patron saint for a year idea!

I just caught up with your blog now, Karen! As usual, you and Lissa are way ahead of me. The thing I loved about Amy's Haiku is that I find myself nodding in agreement and understanding with every last entry. It's as if someone pulled the pages out of my own daily experiences and put them into Haiku. Now I'm just waiting for the book to come out so I can give them out as gifts. Amy, you can arrange that for me, can't you?
By the way, I highly recommend Haiku as an amusing poetic form for the kids. (I'm trying to remember, and I think it was Julie who advised this a while back, but it really helped to read Amy's site to see the possibilities.) My children all laughed out loud at Amy's Nutcracker verse. We see the Nutcracker every Christmas, so they loved the line about the well-aimed shoe. I think they've spent the morning attempting to think in Haiku. If anyone comes up with something amusing or insightful, I'll let you know.

Well...I *was* planning on self-publishing, mostly because my mom likes haiku and I was going to surprise her with a book for her birthday (not sure if I want her to know how much trouble I have homeschooling sometimes though! ). If I actually do it, I'll be sure to post here! I know I'll need tons of advice.
